Review: Peaches - I Feel Cream

Posted 4 months ago
The coolest thing about Peaches is the fact she used to be a schoolteacher. From her sexually charged lyrics and thumping electro to her hideously brilliant live performances, everything about her screams rebel. Her fourth album only pushes her image closer to disgusting yet at the same time demonstrates the professional qualities required to teach music. Expert production alongside A List electro producers Simian Mobile Disco, Soulwax and Drums of Death has enabled the 40 year old diva to out-do herself and create one of the strongest albums of 2009.

With Electroclash still running through her veins, the album is high on angst and drama. The usual Peaches sound is whipped to life once again with gritty synths, slapped by crisp beats and electronic effects all cleverly paced, echoed and tweaked creating the dark contemporary melodies that are oh so Peachy. The sounds alone seem to convey a state of unhappiness, maybe dissatisfaction or even just anger. This, however, is the pinnacle of cool alongside the attitude and swagger Peaches so naturally oozes.

Laser happy, arm throwing, eyes shut rave anthem of title track, “I Feel Cream” makes the album. Production is flawless, everything fits just right and when Peaches raises her voice, she belts out one of the best choruses of the year. Another album highlight, “Talk To Me” sounds just like the type of track Pink or Rihanna would storm the charts with.

Of course, Peaches won’t even reach 200 and that’s not what matters. God forbid she ever gets censored – her dirty mouth is adorable. No body else is so proudly filthy as potty mouth Peaches and I’m pleased to say she’s come a long way from “Suckin’ On My Titties”. She now threatens to “fuck you like a billionaire” and assaults us all with her gorgeously vulgar raps. Fourth time round, however, we’re introduced to Peaches’ vulnerable side. In tracks such as the delicate “Lose You” and the aforementioned “Talk to Me” relationships are questioned and ripped apart, leaving us sympathetic, yet proud still.

Whether she’s dirty or lonely, she’s greatest when she’s stupid. Take her collaboration with Yo Majesty’s Shunda K for example:

“I can’t describe it, try it,
Too much salt in you diet,
Quiet, Riot,
You staying at the Hilton or you staying at the Hyatt?”
Frivolous lyrical brilliance like this is beyond entertaining and if attitude were a physical force, we’d all be hitting the floor with I Feel Cream… if only we weren’t already humping it.
9/10
