lee dorsey's first shot at success came in 1961 when his first release called 'ya ya' went to number seven on the billboard hot 100.
he was born in new orleans, louisiana in 1924, served in the united states navy and started boxing in the 1950's. after meeting allen toussaint at a party he was signed to the fury record label in 1960, but soon after the label folded and lee went back to his car repair business.
his most successful release was 'working in the coal mine' released in 1966 on amy. it was his second and last top ten song. in 1970 dorsey and toussaint collaborated on an album entitled 'yes we can'. the title song was dorsey's last singles charts entry. it became a hit for the pointer sisters under the title, 'yes we can can'.
although there are many great lee dorsey/allen toussaint collaborations like 'get out of my life, woman' released in 1966 or 'everything i go gonna be funky (from now on)' released in 1969, one of my favourites is 'four corners', released as a 45 only on amy records in 1968.
lee dorsey died in new orleans in 1986, at the age of 61.
