Artist:
'the boy least likely to animate their softly sung indie twang with nonstop hooks, bright production, and gently acknowledged adult anxieties. Beneath lyrics celebrating balloons and whiskers lie bittersweet longings.' – Spin 'their child's-eye perspective on English anorak pop, sunny West Coast harmonies, Belle and Sebastian-y folk, country, and soul, is now certifiably… theirs, just theirs.' – Pitchfork (7.5 Review)
'just jolly good fun' – Rolling Stone
the boy least likely to's long-awaited sophomore release hits stores today, April 14, 2009 via +1 records in North America. ‘the law of the playground' captures the spirit of the band's unabashed giddiness in both lyrics and instrumentation at a time when most could use a bit of sunshine. With buoyant songs like 'When Life Gives Me Lemons I Make Lemonade,' the band provides fans of their debut with plenty of sweets.
The band is mindful of portraying this optimism as learned, however, rather than simply wide-eyed. They have lived quite a bit in the past two years, surviving a record-label implosion, and questions about whether this album would ever see the light of day. Yes, the world can be a scary place, and the boy least likely to give a nod to these anxieties in songs like 'I Keep Myself To Myself,' which exposes vulnerabilities that are all too relatable. But the band has come through on the other end with a smile on its face, a smile that is a bit savvier than one might imagine. Their experience provides their unabashed optimism with some fortitude, and manifests itself in venerable insights like the last line of the 'Stringing Up Conkers': 'There is no point in doing anything at all / But I still want to change the world in whatever little way I can.'
All in all, the boy least likely to deliver all the joys of the playground: their beloved signature sound and spirit. But ‘the law of the playground' constantly points at a deeper something, reflecting on the perils we all face in the course of growing up – which is a lifelong quest for us all.
AOL Spinner is currently hosting an online full-album stream of ‘the law of the playground.' Head on over now to listen to the album in its entirety.
We're also pleased to announce that KEXP selected ‘saddle up' for their Song of the Day podcast on April 9th and NPR affiliate KCMP of St. Paul will be featuring the track as their Song of the Day on April 21st.
