North by Northwest, indeed. Seattle's most prominent rap crew, Blue Scholars, have just released their newest collection of songs, The Oof! EP, and let me tell you...Geo and Sabzi have done it again. The album is composed of 6 songs dedicated to Geologic's native Hawaii, with Sabzi switching up his production style to match this shift in sound and subject matter while his partner dances through the eclectic array of beats with even more power and flare. Geo seems to really be evolving as an emcee, and inspired by the culture and struggle of his native people, he ups his game on this one. Plus Sabzi's synths are ringing brighter and his drums are knocking harder than ever.
"'Development' has paved over lush lands and displaced longtime locals," reads the album write-up on the Blue Scholars website, "US military continues its stranglehold on the islands, and tourism runs tings (into the ground). By and by, the people maintain, and Blue Scholars bore witness to life beyond the beaches and resorts. Many 'mainlanders' go to Hawaii to get away. Blue Scholars went to get it in." Indeed they did. Above is the video for their new single, "HI-808," which was shot entirely in Hawaii and edited by Zia (Sabzi's brother and an incredible music video director). Below is "Coo?" from the EP, which I would call a standout track if they weren't all so dope. Cop it if you like what you hear, support good music.
