Hot Tuna (Electric) @ iS Venue, Charlottesville, TONIGHT

I've been lucky enough to have seen the legendary guitarist /songwriter Jorma Kaukonen perform solo on a number of occasions over the years and I last saw Hot Tuna live (with Barry Mitterhoff on mandolin at the time) back in 2006 at Merlefest. All of those live shows which I've seen to this point were presented in an acoustic setting, more in line with Hot Tuna's earliest performances and with Kaukonen's solo work of recent years.
What I haven't witnessed however is the full-on electric side of Hot Tuna, where Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady get to add an amplified punch to their sound by delving into the electric blues and straight ahead rock-n-roll. Or, as the worn vinyl copy of the band's 1975 album America's Choice describes the plugged-in experience: "Pure, unadulterated sounds with amplified additives and the necessary polytonal ingredients to handle heavy loads".
Hot Tuna, featuring Jorma Kaukonen on guitar, Jack Casady on bass, and Skoota Warner on drums, presents an evening of electric blues and rock TONIGHT at iS Venue in Charlottesville. Doors open at 9pm. Granted, it may be a little on the pricey side ($35), but then again legends don't come cheap and the opportunity to see them live doesn't come around all that often.
You can watch a sweet, acoustic performance of Hot Tuna performing "99 Year Blues" HERE (videos of the electric performances sure are hard to come by) or you can listen to "Funky #7" from America's Choice in video form HERE. Tonight's show at iS Venue should be a great one.
