Magnolia Electric Co., led by the incredibly prolific songwriter Jason Molina, have just announced the upcoming release of their latest longplayer (and first full-length since 2006's Fading Trails). Titled Josephine, the album is set to hit stores in the U.S. on July 21st via Secretly Canadian (July 20th in the U.K.)
With at least fourteen studio albums to his credit as a solo artist and frontman for both Magnolia Electric Co. and Songs: Ohia (not to mention a number of EPs, singles, and live recordings), Molina is probably best described as a restless, creative soul and his output to-date is truly nothing short of amazing. For the latest Magnolia Electric Co. album Molina has crafted a concept album that is being described as "an honest-to-God effort on the part of Magnolia Electric Co. to pay tribute to the life and spirit of fallen bassist Evan Farrell (R.I.P. December 2007)." To this end, Molina has said that each tune is a good faith attempt to make real Evan's hopes for the record.
Magnolia Electric Co. recently wrapped up a West Coast tour opening for the Avett Brothers and will be returning to the road in July for a North American tour in support of Josephine and they'll be joined on tour by San Diego's The Donkeys. The tour hits The Black Cat in Washington, D.C. on July 20th. [complete list of announced tour dates after the break]. The band has made available the title track from the forthcoming album and you can give it a listen below. I've also included "Lonesome Valley" from Fading Trails as a little bonus.
