SOUNDS OF FUTURE PAST AND PRESENT PERFECT

Bob Dylan cover Tom Russell Seven Curses

Posted about 1 year ago
I've been visited by 4 of them so far...From wikipedia:Thomas George "Tom" Russell (born 5 March 1950[1] in Los Angeles) is an American singer-songwriter. Although most identified with the country music tradition, his music also incorporates elements of folk, Tex-Mex and the cowboy music of the American West. His songs have been recorded by artists such as Johnny Cash, Nanci Griffith, Dave Alvin, Suzy Bogguss and more. In addition to his music, he is also a painter of folk art and has published a novel and a book of songwriting quotes co-authored with Sylvia Tyson.Old Reilly stole a stallionBut they caught him and they brought him backAnd they laid him down on the jailhouse groundWith an iron chain around his neck.Old Reilly's daughter got a messageThat her father was goin' to hang. She rode by night and came by morningWith gold and silver in her hand. When the judge he saw Reilly's daughterHis old eyes deepened in his head,Sayin', "Gold will never free your father,The price, my dear, is you instead.""Oh I'm as good as dead," cried Reilly,"It's only you that he does craveAnd my skin will surely crawl if he touches you at all.Get on your horse and ride away.""Oh father you will surely dieIf I don't take the chance to tryAnd pay the price and not take your advice. For that reason I will have to stay."The gallows shadows shook the evening,In the night a hound dog bayed,In the night the grounds were groanin',In the night the price was paid. The next mornin' she had awokenTo know that the judge had never spoken. She saw that hangin' branch a-bendin',She saw her father's body broken. These be seven curses on a judge so cruel:That one doctor will not save him,That two healers will not heal him,That three eyes will not see him. That four ears will not hear him,That five walls will not hide him,That six diggers will not bury himAnd that seven deaths shall never kill him.

  1. runobodyii says I've only been visited by the third curse, and there seems to be holes in the application. Kudos to the singer and the song. Thanks.

  3. runobodyii says The third curse seems to have zapped me, but I am not always invisible, sometimes people do see me, hence holes in the application of the curse, chinks where the light shines through, etc. I want you and another MOGger "inrumford" to meet; the two of you have very similar taste, based on what you post. Also a shared sensibility. So I am wondering if this would make for instant bosom buddyhood, sworn enmity, or indifference. I'd also like to lay my suspicion's of a Clark Kent / Superman phenomenon to rest.
