Listening to Suicide

Does anyone listen to this Suicide band? Horrific idea for a group in the late seventies, to use sound effects, an organ or two, and a constant, programmed krautrockish bubble-hit percussion sound. And a swishy noise. Is there a guitar on the record? Anything else would do, really. But their first album has such a daring execution that its minimalism, and its formulas, work to staggeringly dark he

Spike Jones...apparently an essay on the man's anthology
about 6 years ago

Spike Jones is so awesome. Music tightly played, with goofy sounds stitched in. Theresa and I have kept his anthology in her car, imagining together the way that she could compose a stage full of musicians to play the stuff for a recital. Where would you place them? Are costumes part of the performance? Would you only take political or racy songs from his small ouvre?Yes, there are sounds used ...

The "New" Shit Category and List

Okay, so the "new" shit list is of stuff that will probably survive, in some aesthetic way, up to through end of the decade I feel. I guess I would like to include people like Animal Collective and Black Dice, or some Japanese producers, or Questlove and Jim O'Rouke, or Mike Patton, but now that I think of it, (and this applies to Danielson and Sufjan Stevens also) I doubt they'll keep having ...

A MESSAGE FROM LUKE SUTHERLAND:I haven't really got much time for girls, don't get me wrong now, don't get me wrong now--it's just my nights are occupied with lighting these damn lamps, they go...oh and night's a time for courting girls, night's a time for courting girls, isn't it?I've been propositioned by girls before--on me lamp route, oh yes I have. But i'm at pains to explain it's not my lin

Correction:

Correction:The New Shit List is, most accurately, a list of influences worth carrying over, for myself, into my own mixture of music for the next few years. Lists are more personal than they are anything else, unless they're the syllabus for a history class. This is just the kind of stuff I want to grind together into a next phase of taste...an evolution from the other influences mentioned in t...

From Ben this time

The main thing about this MOG thing not working is that mostly none of the automaticaly put-in id3s from my iTunes collection were correct, as it either misread the tags (which I would not understand) or there were too many unhappy coincidences in the comparison of soundforms...I guess the music I talk about, and these lists, are all that can be had to go off of.

And Theresa did go down, and she spoke unto the many gathered:

These American Apparel adds are very interesting. And by interesting, I mean totally annoying. It's a nice idea, but whoever is behind the marketing scheme needs to take a second look at what they have produced. Are those orthodox Jews or Amish? I cannot tell. (I mean Amish would make much more sense considering it's pretty much an American thing and the Amish are known for their so-conventional-t

That Bored w/ the Hysterics

Not digging on the new Flaming Lips album myself tooo much... even though I've been known to dip into happy-go-luckiness musically myself, dysfunctionally at times I'd say, and because it takes one to know one, I'd say--yes it is Wayne Coyne himself--dipping for the first time into not making it work. The new shit has Wayne and the band allowing the minimal cheese to level off, without the lus...
