Dr. Feelgood (the band)

Artist:
Inevitably when "Dr. Feelgood" is mentioned someone always makes a reference to the 1989 album by the infamous hair metal band Motley Crue. I would have done the same before I read the book "PUNK The Whole Story" -2006 published by DK(As a side note I would recommend this excellent book to anyone who wants an in depth look at the formation of the Punk movement scene in the mid 1970's.)As I was reading a chapter about the formation of Blondie, the original bass player (Gary Valentine) mentioned that the band had thrown a party at their loft in New Yorks East Village. It was a who's who of the 70's punk scene. Johnny Thunders,Jerry Nolan, Richard Hell, The Ramones, The Dictators, Suicide and the Talking Heads. They all showed up at this particular party that night. Clem Burke (the drummer) had just come back from a six week trip in London and he had brought back the first album "Down by the Jetty" from the band Dr. Feelgood. They played that album over and over again at the party that night.According to Valentine "The stripped down R&B inspired everyone there that night"Just thinking that a bunch of my musical heroes were jamming to a record and playing it over and over made my decision to listen to Dr Feelgood an easy one.Dr Feelgood were pub rockers devoted to hard rocking rhythm and blues. I can see why the first generation of punk rockers could have been influenced by Dr. Feelgood along with various 60's garage bands. The song I posted is from the very first album. Every time I listen to it, I imagine that I am sitting next to Joey Ramone and Debbie Harry, rockin' out into the early morning light.
