The latest book I have been reading "Rolling Stone History of Rock and Roll" really got me thinking about the roots of Rock music. I know there have been numerous books on the subject about the "first Rock n Roll song" but it is all based on individual opinion's. I did a term paper in college on this subject but I have amended some of it. Listed here are some seminal songs that I believe were critical in the formation of Rock & Roll as we know it today. In my opinion, I believe the first Rock & Roll single to be "Rocket 88" by Ike Turner and His Kings of Rhythm (but credited to Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats)
I present my list and would like some feedback about songs or artists that you think are influential to Rock music today. I have only covered songs from 1938 to 1959 so there will be no Louis Armstrong, Woody Guthrie, Beatles or Bob Dylan.
1938- Pete Johnson and Big Joe Turner "Roll em' Pete"
1946- Arthur Crudup "That's all Right"
1947- Wild Bill Moore "We're gonna Rock, We're Gonna Roll"
1947- T-Bone Walker "Call it Stormy Monday"
 1948- Leadbelly "Midnight Special"
 1949- Muddy Waters "Rollin' Stone"
1949- Jimmy Preston "Rock the Joint"
1949- Fats Domino "The Fat Man"
1950- Wynonie Harris "Good Rockin' Tonight"
1950- Billy Lee Riley "Red Hot"
 1951- B.B. King "Three O'Clock Blues"
1951- Cecil Gant "We're Gonna Rock"
1951- Howlin' Wolf "How Many more Years"

A few days ago someone sent me this mp3. It is a punk cover of "Purple Rain" I don't have a clue who sings this, it was tagged as Me First and the Gimmee Gimmees' but that is incorrect. I tried to see if any of the punk bands that do alot of cover songs might have done it (NOFX, MXPX, Goldfinger, Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake, Lagwagon) but I don't think they did. It's really not even that great of a cover song but it's bugging the Hell out of me. Does anyone recognize this band? Maybe if I offer a prize?
