...and here's the second. i'm very fond of this song and sometimes play it when i do solo shows. while the way his voice cracks up is admittedly pretty funny, i find it incredibly endearing. it sounds like a late night drunken one-taker in the best of ways...enjoy!bye bye now,ben

  4. erikdidriksen says When you said you've done this at solo shows, I checked my collection and sure enough -- but it was under "Alan Hall" rather than the proper "Alan Hull." Shame on mislabeling bootleggers! Thanks for the correction and the eye-opening to another new artist. (And that was the one labeled as a cover -- I've another version from an early '06 Bowery Ballroom show. Speaking of NYC venues, hopefully I'll catch you at Town Hall in May.)

  16. Tangerines says I must say you've created some AWESOME music in the past several years and I commend your efforts. Listening to Forbidden Love is really relaxing and refreshing, along with your other stuff too but that EP is pretty much what got me into death cab. Thanks for the great music, I look forward to future efforts.

  25. Seymour Glass says Big Star/Alex Chilton comes to mind for me, while listening to these tracks. I guess they co-existed in roughly the same time period, but the similarity seems to go beyond that. Melodic pop, well-crafted and produced, maybe masking a subversive undercurrent of resistance toward being too listener-friendly, too polished, too commercial--something that was a bit of an unusual stance then, but a few decades later embraced as a mantra.

  26. idlekind says You reminded me how much I love this song...when I downloaded your live version it sounded amazing so I hope you play it at UCLA where I'm going to have the opportunity to see you. hasta luego, Michelle

  27. rainydaymusical says The piano in this song is beautiful. It'd be amazing to see you perform this live. If you happen to read this, I'd just like to say that the Postal Service has been my favorite band for going on 3 years now, which I suppose isn't that much, but while all of my other music tastes have changed a lot, the one band I always love listening to is the Postal Service. I never get tired of listening to it. I love Death Cab for Cutie almost as much. Basically, you're pretty amazing, and I hope some day you'll come to Philly again.

  29. Otley Bob says

    Hi all

"I hate To See You Cry" has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever written.  It just goes to show that sometimes something so simple works.... the haunting voice of the late great James Alan Hull and his piano.... absolutely beautiful.

I can't say I find the 'way his voice cracks up' strange or funny.....this is all about emotion!  You can feel the pain and heartache in this song like no other.  It sends shivers down my spine everytime I hear it.

I'm proud to say that I heard this song performed live by the man himself, allbeit many many years ago now.

Wonderful stuff, the like of which I seriously doubt we will ever see again.

    Good bless you Hully.
