this x-mas, i got one of the best presents ever: an Ion turntable with a USB interface. since that morning i've been busy converting a shit ton of my vinyl into a virtual shit ton mp3s. what was once just a beautiful dream is now a reality...
through the rediscovery of my vinyl collection, i've fallen back in love with the music of Tom Verlaine. Best known as the frontman for Television, he went on to make some stellar solo records in the late 70's/early 80's. My fav is 'Words from the Front' which is pictured above. while the production is pretty dated in a way only that from the early 80's could be, the songs are great and still sound exiting and inspired 20 years later. enjoy!

how long does it take to convert a vinyl album to mp3?
Not only is Tom Verlaine awesome on vinyl, but on mp3 as well!!!
I have so much vinyl I need to put on my computer(including some deathcab 7"s)
Unfortunately my turntable and my computer don't speak the same language yet.
I'm saving up for the fancy shmancy turntable though. Just you wait!!!
Tom Verlaine rules!!!
i just read an article about this over at the New York Times
Mmmm....vinyl meets PC....wondeful!!
I just got one of these for Christmas, too. Exact same model. I love it!
i was just mogging about converting old pictures and vinyl is right up there with my d/l plans.......
Ha ha. Sat said wondeful! I am bored.
Ben
Get the word out! I just responded to a friend about an article I read on NY Times about the Ion and a competitor:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/21/business/yourmoney/21novel.html?em&ex=1169614800&en=ff3818bbdbf09076&ei=5087%0A
How much techie stuff are you doing to the MP3 's, like cleaning up the static, etc?
Jeff
Oh yes, I work in an office here in NYC adjacent - basically we're sharing space - with one of those hi-end stereo/AV magazines. I want to ask the fellas who look like the editorial staff (unkempt, Sun Volt-tees-on-Friday-dress-down types) about this but feel i may be crucified for suggesting such blasphemy...whattya think?
television...verlaine. beautiful stuff!
such a beautiful invention.
Fuck, I want one of those now.
such a thing exists?
i have been turntable-less for a while now since i had to leave mine when i moved and was considering getting a new one. and this seems like the one to get.
i never heard of him befor,it sounds stellar, reminds me of some of the music from miami vice, and the Ion turntable is epic, i wish i had a toy like that..............
xx
Definitely sounds like early 80's. Reminds me of a cross between Simple Minds and Tears for Fears.
been a while since i heard him 'cept with television yo
i still have a buncha vinyl to convert via my old turntable and a program & software i purchased like 3 years ago
rawk on then
Love the technology thing cuz my vinyl is taking up serious space in the closet, and I could never bring myself to toss it. now about this Verlaine cat, what type of music? is it like the old television stuff?
Vinyls are hard to get on mp3s- staticcy take some time but wortth it if ya do it rite.
Rocking!
have you seen this software?
http://www.channld.com/pure-vinyl.html
vinyl recording software that creates a visual replica of your vinyl with grooves and all. very sweet.
Cool Software Dave! Thanks!
This is great! It reminds me of my "new wave" youth from many moons ago when I was 11 or 12 years old. In some weird way this reminds me of the great band The The's song "Uncertain Smile"...........oh good times gotta go and do the Pat Benatar shoulder shimmy now..........................word.
this sounds just beautiful. thanks.
yeah. I've really been wanting to get one of those for a while. funny, i saw the NY Times article too! and yesterday, I recieved my first record, a 7" that came with the Shins' new album. I'm part of the club now!!!!!
hmm my parents have turntable and my computer has an audio input jack. what's the advantage of USB turntable?
how is the sound quality?
Good call dude. I've heard of these USB turntables. I wish I had enough vinyl to justify the purchase of one for myself. Words From the Front is indeed nastolgic to listen to. My brother had this record on cassette. I remember him pushing it on me when I was a kid as I was getting into New Order. I think Tom was an obvious influence on their music. Keep bringing the MP3 's to your blogs. Much appreciated.

I could never part with my vinyl. Now I'm
glad I stil have them. :)
hey ben, i just found your mog
and im happy to hear that you like CSS and the whitest boy alive.
burnign got me dancing and walking into HMV and buying the album
tom verlaine is really good i like the way he plays with words in lyrics.
and how long did it take to do the vynil i think i would've died!
xo hallie.
man im gunna have to get one of those. my dad still has his vinyl collection from the 70s-80s (my first to convert would be all his beatles stuff)
now this is gunna be sweet.
My husband and I didn't really need to know that such radness existed... le sigh. (because, of course, this means we will have to have one.)
In all reality, I'm so totally excited about learning about a usb compatible turntable... thanks for sharing!
I saw Tom Verlaine perform in Berlin this summer. He did a lot of exceptional slide guitar work more in line with Duane Allman than Johnny Ramone. I was a total fan boy afterwards, going up to him and saying how much of a fan I was. He was not too amused.
heehee u got so many mog friends. you are just suuuuu popular. =D

oh ben gibbard.
words from the front is a great album, I also really dig 'Dreamtime' and 'flashlight'. I saw Television play at Irving Plaza back in 2002, definitely one of the greater pop groups from that time in my opinion.
He sounds like David Byrne. Nice :)
It is no easy task to convert vinyls and cassettes into MP3 's but it feels like a great accomplishment in the end!
wonderful album indeed. these albums used to be all over second hand shops here in belgium...
See, leave it me to keep all my vinyl and my turntables! I've always used my MAC , my mic input and a $5 splitter from Radio Crap to rip my vinyl and cassettes. Now they go and make a USB version turntable! Almost takes the fun right out of it all...
