Jimi vs SRV
-
Artist:
I have to agree that SRV's covers of Jimi's tunes are almost always an awesome mind-blowing display of technical virtuousity, and often a marked improvement on the original. (I listen to SRV's covers of Jimi's tunes all the time, particularly "VooDoo Chile (Slight Return)".) But when SRV played his own compositions, or compositions of artists other than Jimi, it was the kind of stuff that you might appreciate, but you wouldn't want to listen to them more than a couple of times a year (among the exceptions: "The Things (That) I Used To Do", which isn't a SRV composition). SRV was a monster guitarist and vocal stylist, but, sad to say, his original compositions were usually uninspiring. Admittedly, Jimi put out alot of lame stuff, especially while he was part of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. This apparently was in deference to his English band mates. I saw both Jimi and SRV in concert, about 15-18 years apart. I saw Jimi's concert in a large arena in New Orleans during his Axis tour. I saw SRV a couple of times in a smaller local venue. Both of them pinned my ears back. Both had fierce energy. (Full disclosure: I wasn't under the influence of anything during Jimi's concert (shoot, I was, what, 16 years old); I can't say the same thing about SRV's concerts (I know I was enjoying various adult beverages, and other (illicit) stuff.) Jimi melted my brain and made me want to dissolve into an ecstatic puddle of goo. SRV just made me want to get another drink and hit on the girl next to me who wasn't my wife. Of course, this, as my wife likes to point out, is all about me, nothing else.SRV, as good as he was, wasn't an original; Jimi absolutely was an original. Another way of putting it: SRV was an excellent arranger and performer of Jimi's compositions, but he wasn't a particularly gifted composer. A (somewhat faulty) classical music analogy: SRV was like Toscanini; Jimi was like Mozart. Who's the greatest? Jimi wins the argument hands down. Man, is it just me, or are all 50-something geezers long-winded?
