Review of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's Live DVD/CD

Posted over 2 years ago

Why don't more bands send out a full package of live stuff? Instead of just the occasional live album, or a live DVD, why not do a full combo of both and throw in a bonus disc with more goodies. Is it that hard, you hike up the price a smidge to cover the extra recordings for the band and voila, you've got yourself a guaranteed fan favorite.

Well, there is one band that just put out a fantastic triple disc of live stuff, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

This DVD/CD combo pack is chock full of good stuff, from the live concert footage taken from shows in Glasgow, Dublin and Berlin, and hatched together to appear as though its mostly one set list. The DVD itself is 22 songs long and plays out brilliantly. BRMC's live show commands full attention, and get this, instead of showing several minutes of fan interaction or crowdsurfing, or any of the other concert-goer fuss, this DVD actually focuses almost entirely on the band.

What I found best about the DVD, was the lighting. With BRMC, you're not getting the stadium shows, it's hard to even really get them in large arena type settings. In this DVD, the concert setting may be larger than many American fans are used to (as is nearly customary when good American bands travel overseas), but the proximity of the band to the fans as well as the lighting coordination and audio controls is what defines the disc. Just the strobe lights alone demonstrated the pure natural feel of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's show.
