The Airborne Toxic Event Sept. 25, 2009, Slowdown, Omaha, NE
I can't remember the last time I went to a club show where there were so many pop radio fans who just wanted to hear one or two songs. Not letting that take away from The Airborne Toxic Event's show at the Slowdown in Omaha, NE last night, the mantra of the crowd was almost predominantly soccer moms wearing business casual clothing. Sure there was the large contingency of music fans there for a good show, but getting past the gobs of middle-aged adults trying to relive their teens or 20s by "hanging out" for three hours just to hear two songs was rough.
As for the band, TATE was in good form. Although it did seem as though they were a bit worn out, as they should be from their near constant state of touring for the past 18 months or so along with singer Mikel Jollett's recent bout of bronchaitis. Over the (just longer than an) hour set, TATE roared through pretty well everything off their debut album, and tried out a few new songs to give the set a little more texture.
A good majority of the fans packed to the front of the stage helped raise the bar for the set, jumping, dancing, thrashing around while joining in the mayhem that ensued on stage. Led by frenetic singer/guitarist/pianist virtuoso Mikel Jollett, TATE was completely indulged in having a good time and their passion for the music and the atmosphere lit up the venue.
Obviously highlighted by songs like "Sometime Around Midnight" and "Gasoline," TATE went above and beyond throwing in a short two song acoustic block with a new song (something to do with) Georgia (?) and a light moody version of "Wishing Well." Also among the surprises was a cover of The Drifters' "This Magic Moment."
