Album:They Came From The Shadows
This may be the best punk rock record of the year. Newcomers Teenage Bottlerocket just released They Came From the Shadows on Fat Wreck and it's everything you want in punk rock today.
The songs are all fast and aggressive, yet not so much to limit the understanding of the lyrics, plus 12 of the 14 songs are under 3 minutes in length (actually those 12 are under 2:30) They've also got attitude. In several songs, TBR makes some mention of how "great" they are or will be, and one of them in particular stands out as the seminal song in my mind.
"Bigger than KISS" is terrific. TBR sings about letting KISS (or presumably any other '70s band still trying to hang on) fade from existence, while letting the new crop of bands take over and show the world what they can do.
The best part about that is that Teenage Bottlerocket will show the world what they can do. Clearly evident in their self-promoting lyrics, TBR knows they can play. While some may see it as self-absorbed, there's something to be said for knowing you've got something special and you're set on proving it.
