There are a couple of newer songs I am listening to right now. One is Green Day's "Working Class Hero" and the other is Sum 41's "Underclass Hero." It strikes me that the names of these songs, both by pop punk rock bands, are so similar. I'm sure Sum 41 would love to be like Green Day, and I wonder whether these bands actually like (or know) each other.
I am going to admit that I did not know that "Working Class Hero" was a John Lennon song until I saw the cover of the album and did a little research. After learning this and paying attention the words, I like it a lot more than I did at first. My kids are in to it to. I really love the John Lennon version. I didn't know they said "fuck" in songs back then.
The Sum 41 song is good, too. I wonder how much Deryck would like to have the success that Billy Joe has had.
I find it interesting that Rolling Stone did a story in 2005 called "Working Class Heros" and I wonder if this had anything to do with the name of the new album.
In any case, I am a big Green Day and Sum 41 fan, and I find the parallels interesting. I've uploaded Green Day's version of "Working Class Hero" here, and Sum 41's "Underclass Hero" in the comments.
Enjoy.
Oh, and here is an exerpt of the Rolling Stone story about Green Day.
