my thoughts on the new MOG

Posted 7 months ago

I dig the music servic. A LOT. I've played with Pandora, Last.fm (was gifted a free year there a while back) and others. I think the MOG service is the shizzle.

My beef in the past has always been that Last.fm always had the great stats and tracking, and MOG had the great social thing. I just did a quick search for an article I was looking for but couldn't find it. But some "journalist" for some oneline site basically said that MOG was friggin' awesome, but that there was no social aspect.

I find that ironic considering that I have a crapload of friends on Facebook now that I've known for several years now, who I met HERE on Mog. Yet that writer was correct. If you go to the main MOG page, you can't even find a freakin' link to your friends pages or find your feed or anything.

Last.fm had the great tracking service. Mog had the social thing. Now Mog has a great service (I'm payin' the $9.99 a month) but the social thing is LOST. Unless you know how to type in the friggin' URL to get to it.

Just add 1 bleepin' dropdown box on the main MOG page that takes you to your feed and/or the social thing, and this place would be 10 out of 10. As it stands, I give it a 7.

ps. somma you folks know I've been here forever. never once deleted my account. like 5 years now.

Hi Stranger.  Yes, our little community has become an afterthought.  I guess its too damn hard hard to monetize what we do.........

.....but there is a small but devoted vestige of the once mighty crew... ..

For a while now now some of our interesting music lovers have moved on, and I've wondered if any of them found a music social network as cohesive as ours, shrunken though it may be.  I haven't heard from them that they have found one, so I continue believing this is where it's at for sharing ideas, recordings and opinions about music.  The term "social networks" gets mentioned often in the press; they're becoming more popular it seems, but I don't hear about music social networks.  MOG seems to be surviving, but Last.fm, Pandora and Spotify get mentioned more often.

Spike, a bunch of us moved from here to Multiply, and then from there to Facebook.  Neither site is music specific, but you can set up groups that sort of achieve the same thing.  I think my favorite non-MOG place for music fans was Multiply.  We had a tight little group there for a while.

I think spammers signing up as Moggers killed the easy access to the blog posts section. I think MOG got sick of it and decided to hide it from the public. I'm still surprised that newbies find these "white pages" of the old MOG.
