WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Bring Me the Head of Paul McCartney on Heather Mill's Wooden Peg (Dropping Bombs on the White House)

Come to think of it, Brian Jonestown Massacre leader Anton Newcombe was giving away his music online (I mean like the whole catalog of some 13 albums) for free years before Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails' recent headline-grabbing internet releases. It was all part of the anarchic, "keep music evil" mindset of Newcombe, who's pop persona is equal parts Johnny Rotten and Roky Erickson. The West Coast's band's 14th full length "My Bloody Underground" comes out this week, after an uncharacteristic near 3 year hiatus between records. After a few listens, it seems devoid of their usually addictive stoner/garage throwback rock, and finds Anton and friends stretching out on longer instrumental pieces and compositions. Is this a lack of anything new to say after so many albums? Did the 2004 documentary "Dig!" hurt his creativity while it simultaneously upped the band's exposure? "My Bloody Underground" still has plenty of twists and turns to make it interesting, even as it seems Anton and the band are transitioning into a whole new chapter musically.
