MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

everyone else is doing it and i always do it and so here i go, doing it again. this was a strange year in that i had lots of favorite songs but none of those albums blew me away as a whole. the one exception being, maybe, sunset rubdown's "shut up i am dreaming" which i called as my album of the year way back in april and i think it went ahead and maintained that spot for a good eight months, tho grizzly bear gave it a good scare towards the end there. the following are my most-listened-to songs of the year, in order of most to not-so-most. the i-tunes don't lie. links to mp3s provided where available (and stolen from all over the web. thanks web!)

1. black fiction - i spread the disease - who knew? i played this song many mornings to start the day off with some bang. when they echo the title all mumbly, it's one of my favorite musical moments of the year.

2. grizzly bear - knife - simple and yet, completely mezz-o-mo-rizing.

3. candy bars - enough to choke a cold air - posted this one here before but worth a second listen or a first for those who missed it last time. a breath of icy awesomeness from florida! (why cant i put a space between the lines here???)

4. ramona cordova - giver's reply - why this dude didn't explode all over 2006 is beyond me. listen. you WILL like.

5. chad van gaalen - mini tv's - i think the reason i didn't fall more in love with this album was that it had no personality...or too many personalities...or something. this one is all neil young, which, if you listen, is not neccessarily a bad thing.

6. sparklehorse - some sweet day - any year that gives me new sparklehorse songs is a fine year by me. i like the intro to this one.

7. sunset rubdown - us ones in between - "i saw the sun go down outside of arkansas, and i saw the sun come up somewhere in illinois, and in the darkness i turned myself to hate but where were you, oh where were you when the fucking sun goes..."

That is one of Black Fiction's best recordings, for sure. It was a pleasure to write 'em up for West Coast Performer a few months back.

I put that "I Spread the Disease" song on a mix CD for my favorite bass player (and we share a car so I've heard it about 100 times now)...fantastic groove, isn't it?

The Knife by Grizzly Bear is so god damn good and yet like you said very simple! So on my list for the best this past year!
