so, most folks who know me know that i am crazy about this band. i had written them off after their first album, which i felt was sort of two-dimensional and rip-off-y, but when a bandmate of mine picked up 'the menace' on the road and played it in the van outside a mcdonald's in ohio, i was hooked from the first casio barks of "mad dog god dam." what blows me away to this day is how totally always overlooked this album is and how, even now, it manages to excite me something awful. sure, there's maybe some soft nostalgia there, but there's also the strange production, the dry humor ("your arse, my place"), pointy gtrs, sessy vox ("kiss you til everywhere hurts"), a drunken cameo from the fall's mark e. smith, a wire cover (human), and that da da da song by whoever it was. elastica owned up to their rip-off-y-ness and just plain owned it. anyone who says their self-titled debut is better never gave this one a chance. i miss them and i miss justine and m.i.a. (who justine wrote music for) is simply not enuff. in my opinion, this is a must-have in the vein of doolitle, daydream nation, or slanted & enchanted. seriously. it's that good.
