i was at a restaurant last week, in the middle of talking with a friend, when we both stopped to listen to the soft music played over the restaurant's speakers. i recognized the tune off the bat, but could not place it. not being able to recall a song is almost as annoying as your coworker getting a bad song stuck in your head -- i am not sure if this is a coincidence, but in both cases it is usually some catchy top forty track from the early nineties.
needless to say, i couldn't concentrate for the rest of the meal. eventually, as i waited for the subway home, i remembered where the song came from: Mos Def's Ms. Fat Booty off of Black on Both Sides. it's a great sample and is the main reason i played the song out when it first hit.
i immediately looked up the sample on The Breaks (http://www.the-breaks.com/). turns out, the song samples my all-time favorite artist: Aretha. i felt betrayed: how come i didn't know that? anyway, you have to love youtube because someone posted an amazing video of aretha singing the original song.
it's a great video. enjoy!

i always enjoy a good mashup - a new take on a song i've probably played out. when i heard dj swindle mixed nas and al green, i jumped: nas was my first true music love - my illmatic cassette is literally played out -- and al green has been in my heavy rotation for nearly 10 years.
overall, ALMATIC is pretty good, if not a little uneven. life's a bitch/funny how time slips away and made you look/love and happiness (ft. jadakiss and ludacris) are the two highlights.
on made you look/love and happiness, the intro - al says "love and happiness/something that can make you do right/make you do wrong" and nas comes in by speaking "there's no turning back now/this is what makes me/this is what i am..." right before the beat drops (a sample of the guitar lick from love and happiness layered with the organ and a mellow beat) - is worth the whole song.
unlike many mashups, this one makes me actually appreciate both songs more.

this is one of the more intriguing mashups.. sommething that i could feasibly see sounding good together
