This could be really good...

If you are in the Philadelphia area, two shows to check out this week in University City are Carl Grubbs's Ensemble performing "Coltrane Dialogues" at UPenn tonight (3/14/2007) and Coin Coin at the Rotunda, tomorrow.Carl Grubbs is the surviving member of the brother duo Earl & Carl Grubbs (a/k/a, the Visitors).Their 1974 album, "Rebirth" just swings and swings. It is only available on vinyl if you can find it. I'll write more and post something from it once I get a chance to rip something from the vinyl.Carl's cousin, Naïma, was John Coltrane's first wife, and the inspiration for the eponymous ballad. Earl & Carl received their early music training from John, and got to play with some top players as a result of the family contacts. _(A family meeting. That's Coltrane on the far left holding saxaphone, with Carl, Earl, and their father)_Stanley Clarke played bass in the Visitors before joining Return to Forever.
Coin Coin is performing *free* on Thursday. In addition to Matana Roberts (pictured) reeds; the band includes Jessica Pavone, viola; Daniel Levin, cello;Keith Witty, bass; and Mary Halvorson, guitar.Jessica Pavone, her brother, Mario, and family have been getting a lot of positive press these days. Regretfully, I have been missing their shows.
