WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

A bit too civilized for my taste

Posted over 3 years ago
I worked a Pink Martini show last night. Mostly, I chose to work it so that I could get some friends -- who are fans - in to see the show. For me, Pink Martini live sounds like a higher priced wedding band - polished but lacking that certain something. The mostly latin-flavored set reminded me of another band I had seen at the venue - the Buena Vista Social Club/Afro-Cuban Allstars. There was one difference, though, that made all the difference - the Afro-Cuban Allstars played from the heart and the soul, while Pink Martini seem to play from sheet music. The one gem was the theme to the movie "Brazil". I don't know whether it is the fact that I love this movie and its theme or the fact that Pink Martini seemed to open their hearts and allow some of it to infect this piece, but for me, it stood out among the other pieces.

  1. ivylander says I'm glad you articulated this, because it's sort of the way I feel about them, too. A friend urged one of their CDs on me, saying, "It's just your kind of music." Except it wasn't. As you say, it was missing something, a gorgeous hot-air balloon that refuses to rise.

  3. Manos says I agree. I find them to be quite beige. I prefer Bitter:Sweet, among others.
