Give The Harpist Some

Posted over 3 years ago

Why does it seem that the word "harp" and "jazz" stand on oposite sides of a high school dance, afraid to introduce themselves to each other?

Thank goodness for the soulful Dorothy Ashby and her exquisite jazz stylings on the harp. If the idea of Jazz harp fills you with the dread of being locked in an elevator between floors while not being able to shut off the music, think again.

Maybe for me it's the way her tone burns into me like the hammer dulcimers of classical Indian music. Whatever it is, there is a world of wonderful music waiting in the Dorothy Ashby collection.

Worth taking the time to check out.

Most definitely worth the trip. nice one. Do you have anything from Rufus  Harley, on the jazz bagpipes tip? He recorded some for Joel Dorn at Atlantic as well.

Being an unworthy fan of Alice Coltrane, I too believe that harp and jazz belong together like chocolate and pepper.

Thanks for posting Dorothy Ashby's excellent grooves.
