  1. MrFrost says I think the intent with this laffy taffy backlash was good, but its just a little .. off to me. On one hand, you have everybody saying "hip hop aint what it used to be, its not fun anymore, everybody wants to talk about killing and negativity, stop the violence" etc etc. Laffy Taffy WAS a fun song. It didnt promote violence or negativity, but for some reason it made alot of people very jealous. It also WAS a dumb song, but harmful?? no.. not harmful at all. Set us back 400 years?... HOW? everyones forgotten about that damned song already and it hasnt even been a whole year.

  2. arebelsmusic says I have mixed feelings about this... I think when they refer to Laffy Taffy, I think they mean any song that is similar to "Laffy Taffy"...Thats what it looks like... I mean...I can admit it was a "fun" song... cocaine is fun...too much of it is fatal. ChuckTaylor, you said: "It didnt promote violence or negativity, but for some reason it made alot of people very jealous. It also WAS a dumb song, but harmful??" Yes... It is harmful... Youth are growing up to this type of music... Music just like Laffy Taffy is prominent on TV, Radio, and the Internet... And the original message has, for the most part, been lost. Its obvious bullsh!t... The lyrics are NOT impressive...just stupid slapstick humor and the producer is no Mozart...just a fruity looper... With that said, I know this is the Mog-O-Sphere, but once an opinion is expressed, the door is wide open. As a musician and emcee I can understand both parties... I also feel like the mindstate of those involved in this, "Movement", want to see more of thier culture in the limelight. Intellectual Emcee's want respect, real producers want cred. The are targeting a group that: 1. Does the oppisite of what they encourage and rap about... 2. Automatically place them in a category with all types of stereotypes that eventually leave them subject to criticism when they say, "I'm a Rapper". If the Laffy Taffy dudes have those characteristics at the moment...they are a major target...and thats easy promotion. You can't hate thier come-up either. The Laffy Taffy dudes(I wish I knew thier group name) are doing the same thing... Ultimately, and in the end, I feel like both parties are creating barriers within Hip-Hop...dividing and destroying whats left of it...or at least its image. ...and thats what kills it... I don't see Free Speech and the Laffy Taffy guys collaborating in the future... But I think its better than calling someone out... BTW: I don't think that they focused theme of the mixtape... which might have been why you feel the backlash was a little "off".

  3. Scribes4life says I gotta say, I mostly agree with arabelsmusic with one exception: I never considered "Laffy Taffy" a "fun" song. I thought it was idiotic & annoying. True enough MOG is for all types of listeners, but that's my opinion on the subject. I don't think that flashing guns and artists getting killed are the only negative aspect of hip hop music, though. "Laffy Taffy" is overtly sexual, and really that's the only thing going for the video. Yeah, we had Luda, 50, NaS, and even Q-Tip showing us hoes, but at least they are beyond a kindergarten level of creativity, I'm sayin. And I know dudes are out there tryin to get their credentials, but I think it's about more than recognition for those who feel they deserve it. "Laffy Taffy Rots Your Teeth" is like an extended metaphor about that bubble gum, pop filler music that has nothing to say. No, we don't wanna sell guns and drugs to the kids (and easily swayed adults), but we don't wanna fill their heads with nonsense. "If you're not killin, the least you can do is go get some ass," like those are the only issues we're allowed to discuss. I'm with arabelmusic, much needed. I'm not sayin Free Speech is right all the way, but I'd support that music over the "Laffy Taffy" garbage any day. THIS OR THIS
