I don't think that many people stop to recognize or appreciate that the roots of rock, perhaps the greatest musical genre of all time (if I can make a totally subjective statement here ;))lie in the blues and jazz movements of the early part of the century. Folk rock, for example, is closely related to both categories, not to mention funk, ska and many other categories of rock. Perhaps this is why I love the blues so much, and of course, one of my favorite blues voices is Billie Holiday. She totally rocks my socks, even after so many years since her songs first graced our ears. Something about the pain in her real life being clearly expressed in her songs calls to me, and I hope to many others. I went through a tough time in my life almost two years ago now, and nothing comforted me in my darkest hour like listening to Billie's crooning vocals and telling lyrics. I'm not sure if she wrote most of her songs (perhaps some of her more knowledgeable fans might be able to help me there) but her strength and real life struggles, reflected in her voice, are pure genius. Some tracks that I personally suggest are: Lover Man, My Man, T'ain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do, Good Morning Heartache and I Loves You Porgy. Check them out and be amazed!
