WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Album: NPR Archive
(84)

Every year, about this time, I stumble upon this recording on NPR. Usually it corresponds with a lazy Sunday morning or an early evening driving home in the dark, but it is an annual occurrence that seems to bring the holiday season to me.

It is a Christmas story, as written and read by John Henry Faulk, recorded in 1974. It was replayed in 1994 on NPR stations everywhere. The response to this recording was so enthusiastic, and NPR now replays it every year, a wonderful modern tradition.

Just the other night, a new friend mentioned this piece. He said it was a story that heard while driving home, late one night. He said it took his breath away, and contributed to a true "driveway moment" for him. I told him I knew the piece, I told him I would find it for him...well I did, and I post it for you now. Pull up a chair and sit down a spell, with a glass of wine (or hot chocolate with mini marshys...LGE), and enjoy. John's voice is infectious, the story is pure, a true Christmas tale.

NPR has it available for download here if you want it.

Happy Holidays everyone!

I am already tucking in as we speak...and I'm about to watch my secret addiction...Survivor. My secret addiction is reality television, and wine certainly helps...damn, I gotta make dinner 1st. Curse the family and their petty needs...Leave me alone...I'm mogging.

Doesn't seem to work... especially with family... I am guessing pets do their best to make their presence known, but the children will really give us hell when we remain in our own little world & don't focus on them ASAP... Chase just turned 11 months & he's no slouch for attention... MORE MORE GIMME GIMME I NEED I NEED ;)

Two words for you... "Boston Market" heh ;)

Perhaps some who enjoyed "A Christmas Story" would also enjoy listening to this interview with the storyteller:

"1983 Audio Interview with John Henry Faulk

Author and humorist John Henry Faulk talks with Don Swaim about the Freedom of Information Act and why he supports it. He also discusses his entertainment and literary career, being blacklisted during the 1950's and what it was like running for Congress. Faulk is the author of Fear On Trial and To Secure the Blessings of Liberty."
