I am here to confess that there are some artists that I just can't listen to.
I'm not going to beat around the bush...I'm going to rip of the bandaide and confess, open my soul, to the mog-o-sphere, that I can't listen to these musicians.
My top 10 artists that absolutely, positively, don't resonate in my soul.
10. Weezer
9. Wilco
8. Bright Eyes (Conor Oberst, really)
7. Band Of Horses
6. The National
5. Neko Case (her solo stuff)
4. Dan Bejar (his solo stuff)
3. Radiohead
2. Tom Waits
1. Bob Dylan
Gosh...I know I should like them...to me they are Granola, or Grapenuts, something that I know is good for you, but I want to eat my Frosted Flakes, my Cinn. Toast Crunch...my Trix.
I feel so much better...I don't mean to offend, I know so many folk love these artists...But I feel like I have been quietly living on Mog...silently deleting the posts about those you love, because I just can't comment. Mea Culpa.
Anyone else feel like joining me and clensing your soul? Bring it on..

My god woman! Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of the communist party? ??Bob Dylan???
I know Jeff...I know...You were one of the ones I have been hiding from. I was actually going to name names in this post, yours being one, as one that I knew would react to this confession. But in the end..I didn't name names.
I think its Ok! And you did it in a nice way too. Usually when folks make a post like this they start by saying the bands they don't like are terrible, but you didn't do that. I feel the same way about a lot of folks (maybe not these folks!)..sometimes time and listening context can change my mind down the road, but yeah, there are some things I do not get, including The Cure and many, many 80's bands.
That's a pretty good list I could go with although Weezer can kick out a few good one's for me here and there. I can't listen to a whole Weezer album though. It's usually one or two songs I'd like and it's usually the single's off it.
Holy Shite! Now your just looking for a fight.
Waits?
Your tires are so gonna be flattened.
Put em up will ya. Come on. Come on.
Strange I said the same about DCFC. Neener, neener.
Cody B, THE CURE?
What, you want a piece too?
What's with you people?
Chris - I knew I was opening myself up to a DCFC comment...but I didn't care...I had to come clean. Waits...I know man...I have often thougt of him as the Three Stooges of music...Guys love him / women, not so much.
...sorry to the mass amounts of women moggers that love Waits that I have just offended.
Cody - I'm not saying no to them...I just don't see it. But there is hope. Love the Mermaid Ave. sessions with Wilco and Billy Bragg...
RGM - Singles do shine more then the rest...I get that.
Not even 'Alice' or 'Blood Money'?
Frank's Wild Years?
What's with the Cure? I get why people like 'em, but it ain't me..I don't think it is necessary to like everything. Respect everything,yes..like,no.
I feel the same way about numerous keyboard based '80's bands. The whole array of new electronic keyboard devices that came out then sound awful to me..this also includes early Prince records. Sometimes with Prince or even the Cure the songs are so good despite the sounds that I can live with them, but it does detract, as do synth drums and the overall sound they got out of real drums back then.
Okay that's it.
Your on the list B.
Cody B. = slightly disfiguring accident.
Anybody else?
I was already on the list!
I am -- those were the best LOL comments I'd seen all day.
Well done, Annie, starting a flamewar. Get the blood going on a slow-news Wednesday.
sef, (between you and me, I got to keep a tough outer shell. Otherwise these cretins won't respect me).
What are you looking at Anderson? Mind your own business.
Smokey Joe...Zappa...I forgot to add Frank to the list.
Chris - Don't start making nicey nice with my brother and make him choose sides...it won't be pretty.
Sef - Meet one of my favorite moggers "I_am":http://mog.com/I_am . More affectionately known as Chris.
You have NO idea how glad I am to see The National on this list Annie! I've tried & tried to like them, but to no avail(& they are a great band)just not my cuppa.
But RADIOHEAD, wtf? haha And Wilco, Weezer, & Waits? I can see how women wouldn't be so much into him, alot of his lyrics are quite sexist towards women(although I'm aware he's writing 'in character', but whatever).
But Bright Eyes, a big MEH! Super talented, writes great songs but the music just doesn't grab me. Dylan I can take or leave, depending on my mood. Used to be into him in the '80s but now not much. Appreciate his art, voice & music but he's doing nothing very interesting for some time imho.
So go ahead with your DCFC obsession(as you well know, I'm still not wild about 'em), we won't hold ya back, just so long as you don't hold us back from our Weezer, Wilco, Radiohead & Waits. Fair enough? You gotta deal!
August - DEAL!
Holy Moses! You didn't.
Zappa?
Well I have to agree with ya. He had his moments.
Nicey nice.
Sef as an uncle, you completely rock in the 'gift giving' field.
Annie, Sef is free to choose his own path. Just so happens my path may be lined with Susan B. and Sacagewea dollars. If ya know what I mean.
Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.
Ooops, out of character.
I think it is easy not to get Zappa..but after living with a Zappa-phile for a few years I came 'round. THE BIG NOTE rules.
You know, I'm with you on every single name on that list, especially Waits and Dylan. They don't resonate within my soul, and I don't understand why anyone goes nuts over them or declares them voices of a generation. But ... I still find them all somewhat to mostly likable.
Something I would add to the list if it were mine: Arcade Fire. Hey, guys! Bruce Springsteen called. He wants his sound back. Hell, I would put Springsteen on my list, for that matter!
Props to you Anniander. Very courageous. I don't get or get into Dylan either. Zappa's right there in that list of people I don't dig too. I wouldn't dream of telling someone they're not good or even great artists/musicians (I got mad respect), but they're not my bag. Generally, I have no beef with people telling me they don't like something. It's when they suggest that the artist is no good, and I think this is just a mental mistake for some, to explain their like or dislike that I don't approve.
Carmen - I get the Springsteen...but I do like the Arcade Fire...go figure.
Oh, also dig the title of the post. A Depeche Mode reference???
I might have my MOG pass taken away for saying this but there are three bands I can't stand that get a lot of love here on mog.
1. Ting Tings (liked it better when they were named the sounds)
2. MGMT (that voice is stuck in my head, and not in a good way)
3. Sigur Ros - (Nope just cant get into them)
I will be packing my bags now to avoid the angry mob that is coming to take me away
It's cool. I hate Sigur Ros, too. So don't run from Mog, Rawkkidoh, just run to my page and we'll have a ball bashing them together.
Okay, time to bring out the big guns. Give it a listen.
oh my, you were feeling brave today, weren't you?
I actually agree with you on several of your top 10...except for #6. The National is one of my super duper favorites to listen to when I need healing, when I need to relax. Seeing them live was the cement, though, and I wasn't as into them before that. Maybe that's what you need...to come to a National show with me.
(did you know a certain bassist has had Fake Empire as him personal myspace song? And I liked The National before that, in case you are wondering)
I still love you. :) Especially since you don't like Wilco either. ::ducks::
Oh Annie, You caught me agreeing with DMDM!? I have to re-iterate, are you a communist? Dylan? I mean I can understand Tom Waits, and even Radiohead (even though I love both of them) but c'mon, Dylan?
ah heck, I still like your posts anyway, even if I might have to take away your "right to rock" credentials.
I never even heard of those groups except Waits, Dylan and Zappa. I wish i could add some of my own, but i don't have half the courage you do. Damn!
Sam The Artist is going to remove my electronica license...but Sigur Ros...I struggle with too.
I'm pretty much right with you Annie, except for Radiohead and The National. And even though I like Radiohead, I'm still nowhere near as into them as many here, so there's that.
I also agree with you that none of these acts are bad, just not your cuppa tea. That's cool. I respect the heck outta Dylan, but a lot of his songs just ... meh.
Here's a few that I can't listen to:
hehe /// bob dylan as number one.... you knew you were opening yourself up on that one... I hope you have cleansed yourself now.... and can get on with the business of what you DO enjoy.... cause that's what it is all about......
.... when you start to learn the guitar... try a couple of Dylan songs out... you might turn over a new leaf.
youre walkin on thin ice little lady!!!!!!!!
well guess what, i cant stand barenaked ladies. so there. ;)
a lot of them on your list i can relate too, but i mean, weezer and radiohead have some CLASSICS. i cant stay mad at them no matter how many of their songs miss me.
Hmmm. All I'll say is that I agree with your assessment of Bright Oberst
So now I know for sure that you weren't the one who kidnapped my Radiohead cd for all of those months...
I was listening to Bob Dylan today. I do like him. In small increments.
Good on you for posting this. I don't like the whole hierarchy of music thing, myself. Altho I do like some of those on the list. Waits, though? Not so much. Not Bright Eyes either.
Warning: I am going to call you soon........
Wow. I'm glad I wasn't the first one to come right out and admit the head scratching at the love some of these guys get, but since you've been brave, I'll add my voice to those that just don't get Dylan. At all. Or Springsteen. Or Sigur Ros.
Whoo! I feel better.
nooooooooo...what have opinions come to as of late?
p.s. - the boss makes me want to shove a fork in my forehead too, though that's probably because I come from New Jersey
I'd name about 6 really lazy rappers but I can't even remember their names. Calvin Harris and Mylo are way overrated as well. And Bruce - I always feel like I'm hearing an aural jigsaw puzzle and one of the pieces is missing. Radiohead - why won't he stop whining? Madonna - act your age, not your shoe size. Duffy - you're not Dusty Springfield and it's not 1965. (Uh oh, better get my coat and leave before I get warmed up...)
what's great is that I was thinking about posting something on the worshipping of Radiohead on Mog and elsewhere... they are no doubt a great band, but I just feel that the love for them is a bit extreme. Personally I just don't think they are all music's saviors. Inventive? absolutely. Talented? Can't argue there.. But are they Jesus?
I'm totally with you on Weezer and Band of Horses as well. I like BoH, but they are bordering too close on "all their songs sound the same" territory.
Dylan, Death Cab For Cutie (sorry, lady), Vampire Weekend, Lykiie Lee (or however is is spelled), Coldplay, I can go on and on and on and on.
That's a great list, and as other have said - your bravery is admired. I can agree with most of your list, too. Dylan and Weezer are ok in thimble-sized doses. I've tried on Wilco and The National, but they didn't fit. I love how Waits writes and acts, but the "Three Stooges of music" is good assessment. I keep trying with Radiohead, and though I feel as if there's something there, I have yet to listen thru a whole recording. Zappa has moments and mnemonic connections. But, if you really want those I can't and/or refuse to listen to?
Dave Matthews
80's hair bands
Dave Matthews
opera
Dave Matthews
...see the pattern?
Radiohead's on your list? :-0
Yes, annieander, a nice inversion of the "Guilty Pleasures" confessional. I'm disappointed in most of your choices (except Bright Eyes). Thank you for not including Nick Cave (some women, you know, as with Waits...).
Anyway, here's mine:
Elvis Presley. I recognize his talent and contribution (really), but I can't listen to ANY of his songs without hearing quotation marks around them: "Hey, kids! Dig this corny spoon-rattlin' clap-trap!" they seem to say. Of course, now I'm trying to think of a counter example from that era to show that I'm being fair, and... I can't. OK - my Confession (revised) is that I dismiss out of hand, the music of the entire generation who founded youth culture and set in motion the revolution that would allow me to enjoy Boards of Canada or Fountains of Wayne without their having to be Bing Crosby. Or Frank. Thank you and I apologize.
Stchew - a couple of things...
1. No apology needed or required.
2. Nick Cave was this close (thumb and finger an inch apart) to making the list.
3. Aren't you supposed to be working...I know, I'm not working either, but then again, I am never working.
4. I'm surprised you remembered your password.
I just added Scotfree to my trusted based on his obvious "uggg" for Dave Matthews alone
What do they say...the enemy of my enemy is my friend. :)
My list, in no particular order..
Dave Matthews and any band he happens to be singing with
Coldplay
U2 (sorry...just think they are waaaaaay overrated)
Wilco
White Stripes (putting that one up here kinda scared me)
New Pornographers...while I approve of the band name completely the music...not my cuppa
rap in general
country in particular
wow... this is some confessional thread, huh?
well... I applaud your honesty, but I have to have hope that you may reconsider numbers 1-7. I actually do understand not listening to greats like Tom Waits (I think the guy is amazing) and Dylan... just because their voices are so unique that even though I know you respect them, they won't be on your rotation. Some of the others, though... (radiohead? Ack! One of the greatest ever!)
Stuff that never seems to make my rotation:
Rolling Stones (mid-seventies on... 60s and early 70s=love 'em... after that... no thanks...)
Coldplay... I like the first album... then a song or two from every other release, but nothing sticks...
Rod Stewart: Hate his solo stuff... can't stand his voice.
Captain Beefheart: I tried to get into it... Most of my favorite acts site this band as an influence... couldn't get into it. (although Trout Mask Replica is one of the greatest album covers of all time.)
Also... I'm a big U2 fan... mostly early stuff... but I HATE the double live album... Red Rocks works for me, but "Rattle & Hum" ...ug. can't stand it.
Weezer, Wilco, and Radiohead are my loves. You're controversy sure generated a lot of comments...
I actually don't know some of those. But I agree with you on Bob Dylan. His voice botheres me beyond reason. And Bright Eyes/Conor I can handle in small doses, but agian.. the voice.
