It's a sick day, but not for me...

Posted almost 4 years ago
My boy has pneumonia, just diagnosed on Wednesday evening, so I'm home.He has had a persistent cough, heck, we both have. His just seemed to change Tuesday night. I got him in for a check and we were promptly sent to the hospital for chest x-rays, blood tests for mono, and a skin test for TB...It seems that when the fever spikes in children, at night, it is a warning sign for TB. And since I was coughing too...chest x-rays all around. He has his recheck today and a read of his skin test. My life will become very difficult if he has TB...he won't be able to go to school, and the health department will have to notify EVERYONE. But then again, I am getting ahead of my self. My x-ray came up clear, and so far his skin test looks pretty normal. He is on anti-biotics and can return to school on Monday if he gets the okay.Keep you fingers crossed for us.Moggers, bring on your songs for the sick...bring on your songs about being sick...(auto disqualification "Sick, Sick, Sick" by QOTSA)

  1. Shud33 says Hey Annie, where he got the shot, is it swollen? Cause if it isn't, you are in the clear. I have had many of these from when I worked in a pre-school and in the medical field.

  2. annieander says Not swollen, not red, not angry. I just think they are being overcautious about the whole TB thing.

  3. Shud33 says Well better to be safe than sorry. But no redness or swelling is a good thing! :)

  4. Dzendvokh says good luck Annie.... it seems like I have been sick this last year (with my kids and from my kids) more than anytime I can remember ...definitely no fun. However, if you yourself are not sick, sometimes it can be a bit of a blessing to take care of them and nurse them back to health.

  5. annieander says It is nice to take some time off, but I will have to go in on the weekend to make up for it...Payroll has to get done, and I am the only one there to do it. So there goes my Saturday. But thanks for the sentiments you guys.

  6. dachmo says It sounds like the type of flu that's been going around this season. My whole family had it and it takes weeks for the cough to go away. When I had it the fever got worse at night but never got bad, barely hit 100 at any point. My father soon got it and after 10 days was as well diagnosed with pneumonia. If they do feel it to be pneumonia be prepared for the doctors to admit your son and keep him in the hospital for up to 10 days while they administer antibiotics and watch him. I was told that it was common procedure. My cough finally went away after 3 weeks. This flu presents itself like pneumonia with fluid in the lungs but really is just a bad chest congestion. My doctor said it was the Australian Flu that knocked us all out. The Flu shots that the doctors made up this year didn't include a vaccine for this strain so it seems to have run amok all over the country. I hope that's all it is and your son gets better quickly. If it is the flu get him on Mucinex which worked wonders for me. He'll cough up a lot of fun stuff but that's what it's supposed to do. Good luck!

  7. annieander says I have never believed in getting the flu shot...It always seems like a crap shoot if they got the "mix" right. Seems like they didn't get this years right at all. A 3 week cough...yeah, that seems about right, his just took a turn. So far he hasn't had to go to the hospital, and I would fight as hard as I could to keep him from the hospital. Mucinex...right, I'll check it out. Make sure it is good for kids to take.

  8. contrabandwidth says Yeah, there have been some nasty cold/flu's going round it seems. Hpefully it will be okay, you know these doctors have to rule out everything. My boy's still coughing from the cold a couple weeks ago. I agree those flu shots agree pretty much pointless, unless you like having a cold for 3 months.

  11. Bartleby says I can only imagine what it must feel like - as a child I had typhoid fever which took some toll on my parents... My fingers are crossed and my positive thoughts are with you. Since you've asked, here's "Hospital Beds" by Cold War Kids

  12. annieander says No one can ever say that moggers don't like a theme...and all nice additions to the theme might I add. It looks like the TB has definitely been ruled out...phew. We had a nice walk down to the doctors office...and he was well enough to have ice cream, a double scoop (lemon custard and cinnamon on a sugar cone) from Tucker's Super Creamed Ice Cream after the appointment. Just a single scoop for me. If I can suggest one thing for parents to do with their kids, it is to walk places, if possible. I learn much more about his life and the goings on at school when we walk places. It really allows him to open up.

  18. annieander says S.I.B. Ouch, I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. Do you think that is why they wore those hats, to keep the swelling down?
