WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

badfinger

Posted over 2 years ago
i heard badfinger on the radio with their hit "come and get it" and that made me ask my mom to take me to see the film, the magic christian, which i didn't quite fully understand, being all of 11 or 12 years old. but ringo was in the movie, so that entertained me.

badfinger did have a relationship with the beatles, and they were on apple records for a few albums. george harrison even played on and produced one of them!

not long after i discovered them, badfinger had another great hit song, "no matter what," a beatles sounding tune and that pretty much cemented the deal for me.

the song "without you" was a track from the album no dice that i particularly liked, and had a hard time convincing my friends back in 1971 or 72 when harry nilsson had a hit with it that the song was written by these guys.... badfinger (since nilsson was quite the amazing songwriter himself).

i followed badfinger religiously. i think they were at the top of their game as a band in the concert for bangla desh and their performance as a backing band for some of the superstars really shines through on the excellent DVD of that film.

i was just making a comp for the car and going through all my iTunes tracks, realized that i had badfinger ripped and loaded, ready to go.

sadly, the two main guys in the band, pete ham and tom evans each hanged himself because of the horrible way their inept manager handled their business affairs. truly sad stuff.

but the music is amazing.

  1. dermahrk says Yes, the history of Badfinger ends very tragically which is a damn shame. Still, we're left with a lot of great music. And, when someone asks me to define what I mean by the term "powerpop", I point to "No Matter What" as the prime example of everything I love about the genre. I bought "No Dice" when it came out, and have just started expanding my Badfinger collection. Great post.

  2. itchybrother says excellent song, thanks for posting! Take It All is one of those great under-the-radar tracks you get when you dig deeper past the hits. And what's great about Badfinger is you never have to dig deep to find the great stuff.

  4. scotfree says Yes, a great song and a great band. As Dermahrk says, they very well may have invented powerpop. Very special memorieswith your notes on "No Matter What", that was in the setlist of my very first band and probably the very first song I ever sang on a stage. Gotta drag that one on the deck, thanks Anna!!

  5. contrabandwidth says I watched The Magic Christian a couple of years ago, and I still don't understand it. Plus the song plays like 20 times through out it. Great song, but a little too much of it. Check out my post of Nilsson doing ??Without You en espanol??

"Take It All" was one of the last songs that I played on the radio before heading to California for a couple of weeks. I return home to log on and there you are with the same exact song. Spooky...

Badfinger's story should be a primer for anyone deciding upon a musical career. It was the ultimate "Behind The Music" episode on VH-1 but due to it's downbeat history, it aired only a couple of times versus Leif Garrett or TLC's segments. There are many lessons to be learned from Badfinger's story, but most of all, the music has staying power to this very day.
