I listen to a lot of soundtracks. I see a lot of movies, and I make movies and tv programs, so the instrumental track is an essential part of my listening.

but even way back on the earliest records i can remember listening to (the beach boys come to mind), there was frequently an instrumental track.

imagine my suprise when, Beatles completist that I am, bought the Yellow Submarine album for the songs "Hey Bulldog" and others...to find that the entire B side was instrumental score stuff from the movie. I never listened to that side. But lately, I have been. I remember in the film that there was a snippet of JS Bach's "Air for the G String" which I thought fit its visual sequence so well. Its wonderful to hear it while I'm working now...

The Faces always had an instrumental. I remember loving "The Pineapple and the Monkey" from First Step. And then Ronnie Wood and Ronnie Lane recorded "Mahoney's Last Stand," an album of music for a movie that I don't think ever came out. Its got country flavor, classic rock... very 1970s England.

Jeff Evans of 68 Comeback fame has a composition called "The Man Who Loved Couch Dancing" and Jack Oblivian recorded it and included it on his latest, "The Flipside Kid." His inclusion of it reminded me of the Faces for some reason.

here it is!

  1. RobinH says There is an interesting list of rock instrumentals over at Wikipedia. "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rock_instrumentals":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rock_instrumentals It's funny, I was thinking about instrumentals only the other day, as a result of creating a playlist of early NWOBHM albums. For example, Iron Maiden (Transylvania from Iron Maiden), Angel Witch (Devil's Tower from Angel Witch) and Samson (Thunderburst from Head On).
