it goes all the way back as far as i can remember. it was bob dylan! all his fault, or his credit. without bob, i would have known only woody guthrie as the guy who wrote "this land is your land," which we sang in elementary school... and without its verse about "trespassin'"then there is donovan, wonderfully lampooned and put on the spot in dont look back which influenced my filmmaking as much as anything coppola did. so when some power company used donovan's "catch the wind" in a commercial about wind energy, i had to dig up my copy of donovan's 2-disc box set, which i've ripped on to my computer and been listening to a lot.given that he was not the world's greatest folkie, donovan did himself a huge favor by exploring his pysch leanings. mixing that with his folkie style and pop music, you get one of the best songs EVER: "sunshine superman."i remember "sunshine superman" vividly! it was a big AM radio hit the summer we first vacationed in san diego. given that i grew up in santa barbara...one wonders what my parents were thinking. going from your hometown beach town to vacation in a beach town 4-5 hours in a car away.... maybe it was all about tijuana. yeah, i still have an onyx chess set from 1966i encourage you to re-discover donovan's sorta psych period:sunshine supermanseason of the witch

bob!

  2. Kate says Great post. I have two recommendations for ya: check out Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings version of "This Land is Your Land"- they turn it into a James Brown-esque funk song. Also, if you haven't seen the re-release (deluxe edition) of "Don't Look Back", grab it up, 'cause it has a whole DVD of an alternate take of "Don't Look Back", different shots of every scene, so so cool.

  3. anna log says Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings should be on everyone's radar. The whole Daptone label has some KILLER releases. If you get a chance to see Billy Bragg live, do it. He is the 21st century heart & soul of Woody Guthrie and does a Latin-tinged version of "This Land Is Your Land" on Cinco de Mayo --- "la tierra es su tierra" and its got a cha-cha beat.

  4. Mike the Knife says I'm not even in the closet about it: Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Tom Rush, and Donovan are all right with me. And I'm not afraid to admit that I even love overly psychedelicized Donovan stuff like "Epistle to Dippy," "Jennifer Juniper" and "Mellow Yellow." A little embarrassed, yes. But not afraid.

  6. Mike the Knife says My philosophy, as regards music: If it's done well, no matter what the genre, I'm interested. And if you like something that I don't or that I think is poor of kind, it's your thing - and I'll try to keep my contempt to myself. At least I'll try... ;-)

  7. dermahrk says Donovan really does get reamed, undeservedly, in Don't Look Back. Ok, he's not Dylan, but who is? I have a lot of Donovan in my collection, but the folkie stuff seems to have a longer shelf life than the psychedelic stuff, which has not aged that well. And, after spending hard-earned teenage bucks on "Gift From A Flower to a Garden" I gave up on him. Still love the old stuff, however.
