My Fave Online Radio Station

Posted over 2 years ago

North Fork Sound is 3 years old today.

The best way to wish them a Happy Birthday is to LISTEN! Easiest way to listen is to visit their site and click on the PLAY icon while you read the playlists and what not.

Where else can you hear Social Distortion and all things Lemmy on the same playlist?

This is free form radio the way it ought to be.

Happy Birthday North Fork Sound!

Not bad...for 2009. Out here in Hawai'i in the late 1960's, Norm Winter decided that a "people's choice" radio station was just the thing to shake up turgid FM radio. So, ballots and boxes were distributed to every place that had some connection to music. Each week, the ballots were tallied, and what ever got the most votes was played in that order. So, Radio Free Hawaii played Rock, Classical, Reggae, Pop, Country, Hawaiian, etc. Radio execs were quaking in their boots, what if this concept caught on and advertisers jumped on the RFH bandwagon? Long story short, it was a real world concept way ahead of it's time. It's been many years and corporate radio has taken hold, but it's possible to simulate RFH by letting iTunes' DJ loose on all of your MP3s. Is there an Internet radio station that dares to play Puccini, followed by Marty Dread, who segues into Bad Brains, which surrenders to Louis Armstrong, etc.?

Anna, the guy who runs North Fork Radio is Howard Thompson, who for many years was a very very talented A&R guy. (Until he left t he industry.) He signed Eddie and the Hot Rods, The Psychedelic Furs, Happy Mondays, Adam and the Ants, and Motorhead, among others. He has a brilliant blog reminiscing over many of these bands. Oh yes - he started as a tape op at Trident Studios working on Bowie and Bolan albums. The blog is well worth reading.

Howard was not only the A&R guy with the best ears, but he was also quite up front with his opinion.  It was always scary to go play Howard something new, but it was also a major time saver because he got right to the point.  i learned a lot from him over the years and still thank him today.

speaking of which, i thank him for NFS and thank you for the post.  there's another good one i recommend on BBC.  Guy Garvey, the singer from Elbow does a pretty great show.

of course, i'm also still a major fan of Nic Harcourt's show, which is a little different now on KCRW but available on demand as well.

yes, John --- I know its Howard Thompson, but as he is a great pal, I didn't want to pimp his station as an extension of a friend and have it seem I was simply promoting a friend - but as a stand alone station because it deserves that. And I wanted the cat to be let out of the bag organicly - which you have done!

Howard and I history with Eddie & the Hotrods and Georgia Satellites.

we worked on a couple things in recent times -- he was one of the god-sends during my tenure with the Underground Garage.  I like NoFoSo way better than my erstwhile station.

I love the guy!  He was the first person I knew who had a CD burner back in the 80s.  And he does send the best Xmas cards.
