This was released in 1990 and I remember the video being played on MTV like every 20 minutes (can you imagine an "oldie" like Petty being played on MTV these days?)...as an East Coast girl, this song represented the West Coast life. Obviously the lyrics make reference to LA landmarks and the video is filmed there so blatant messages were being transmitted; regardless, when I hear "Free Fallin", as Zep says, I look west.
There's a wonderment attached to the West Coast lifestyle - to me, I imagine a lot of sun, nature, and a creative buzz that is unrivaled. I'm from NYC so creativity is pulsing through the streets, but the West Coast creative vibe is unencumbered by the frantic activity of NYC. In my mind's eye I see a more seamless flow of artistry (musically) that is absent in NYC. What you find in NYC is more of an edgy and buzzed ethos, whereas the West Coast's is gentler.
"Free Fallin" gives me that soft and gentle feeling that I associate with the West Coast, and makes me feel like I'm riding in a convertible in 85 degree heat with my favorite love song playing. Great song.
