WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Adrenaline, an overlooked album.

Posted over 3 years ago
So, I can remember back to middle school. I remember people that I hung out with liking the Deftones. A band which I never paid much attention too. But, at that time, they were making music with a style that would explode in the years to come and especially near the turn of the millenium. The "nu-metal" sound. Although, 99.9% of what is considered nu-metal is complete garbage, in my opinion, some of the earlier artists broke through with a, then, unique sound. Along with Korn's first two album's I'm going to have to say that "Adrenaline" helped forge that sound. I'm going to go ahead and say that 94-96 was the apex of the nu-metal sound, with regards to quality. Although the song writing is a bit repetative, Adrenaline pulls togeather a textured guitar sound and some pretty aggressive riffs that combine with Chino Moreno's vocals well. "Bored" and "Engine Number 9" would have to be my personal favorites. I'll have to take a listen to the Deftone's other albums. I'm predicting a steady drop of in muscal quality as they progress. Maybe "Around the Fur", the album after Adrenaline might be as good or better. We'll have to see.

  1. Bloodstorm669 says Of all the terms in music today, i feel that the term "NU-Metal" is the most outlandish. What makes "nu-metal" "NU". Some one answer me that please.....why cant it just be metal..... oh well. As far as the Deftones are concerned i cant say alot for their last album "Minerva" i think it is, but i will say that White Pony was a great album......i loved Adrenaline and Around the Fur wasnt bad but somethin about White Pony just gets me......Could it be that they had Maynard on it?!?!?!?!?!? yeah for those who dont know....track 7 i believe The Passenger. And as far as the bands that came out around the same time......have you checked out the early shit from bands like Incubus, Ultraspank, or Spineshank? Korn did an unbelievabl thing when they released Follow the Leader....they released a totally free cd with up to 20 traks on it each one from a different band, and what was it called????? Family Values, its where i first heard....Staind, Sevendust, Static-X, Kidney Thieves, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park (then known as Hybrid Theory), Incubus, Powerman 5000, Kid Rock (sorry for those who dont like him, i dont), Hed PE.....Pitchshifter, and i dont think that they all fall under the title of nu-metal....but almost ALL of them are great/were bands. i hope youll check some of em out.

  3. sage1979 says I'm going to have to second what Chuck said basically. I really dig Adrenaline, but Around the Fur is my second favorite. My favorite is White Pony. But, yeah, it's probably because Maynard is on it ;)

  4. analogvoid says I think what I mean by Nu-Metal is that wave of hard-rock that came up in the mid 90's.. it's defintely not just "metal" because metal is defintely more layered (guitar solos, etc). Nu-metal seems to be less melodic and more of a drony guitar feel.. but i'll agree.. i really don't like labeling music because it draws lines around it. It's better to listen and really get your own feel. Early Incubus is awesome.. and some of Adrenaline reminds me of some of the tracks on S.C.I.E.N.C.E... a similar feel.. .as far as Maynard being on White Pony.. I was unaware.. i gotta check into that.

  5. sage1979 says Yeah, I don't like labeling music into sub-genres and I'll only label it in general if I *have* to, because, like you said, it draws lines around it and I don't think that's how music should be. S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is a great CD, but I hadn't considered Adrenaline sounding similar, I'll have to give the two a re-listen tomorrow. Hehe.. yes, Maynard is on the track *Passenger*. From what I read in interviews, it was a total fluke that he even ended up on the album. If I remember correctly, what happened was, he was helping write the song, and he kinda just started half assed singing into the mic to get his point across on how he felt the song should sound. After the song was written out, Deftones felt that Maynard should do some vocals for the song, and he agreed.

  6. Parker catalano says I think that the fact that the Deftones were placed into the same category as Korn and Limp Bizkit is total bullshit. They are far better than either of those bands, and developed a different style of metal that had to be called Nu-Metal because of the time period. Adrenaline ruled, because it was their raw metal album, but their self titled album is fantastic, and incorporates some electronic aspects as well. Nice post.
