WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Kings of Leon's new stuff...hrmm....

Posted 10 months ago

For the love of all things that you consider holy, please do not throw e-tomatoes at me, but I am somewhat, ok let's not kid ourselves here, just flat out disappointed in Kings of Leon's new single "Sex on Fire."

I listened to it when it first came out and thought, "meh, too bad their sound is evolving in a way I don't really care for, but if it's a good move for them, it's a good move for them."

Now, I've got a friend IMing with me and he's the total mainstream, everything "popular" freak. He likes a lot of poppy stuff that is just not my style. I respect it, cause it's music and music is a beautiful thing and it can communicate what so many things just cannot, however, he said he really liked this song. Now, the only reason he knows who they are is because four years ago, I got way into them and played Aha Shake Heartbreak for him, and he no likey. Now, he's all about this song.

I had another listen, because I thought maybe he was tipping a toe to the darkside, cause you know we have cookies, AND good music, but to no avail. The song is just not my thing, and alas, I am disappointed. Granted, I haven't heard the whole album so maybe I shouldn't judge but, I don't think I'll buy this one. Maybe one day they'll revert back to their original awesomeness. For now, I think I'll settle for the first two albums. They are GOLD.

It's funny, I like their new album a LOT, and I like their older stuff, too. It's just that it's almost a different band. See, I really like Bloc Party as well, and after listening to *their* new album, it didn't really grab me. The new KoL record, at times, reminds me of Bloc Party, so it's almost like KoL made the new Bloc Party record and BP made a record...by a band I don't recognise or like much. :)

I love the single and the whole album, and I've heard similar from folks like yourself, who love the old stuff but are lukewarm (at best) with the new stuff.

    Which is fine. :)

I can appreciate everything you said :)  I am actually really happy that it works for some people.  Actually, I liked their last album "Because of the Times" pretty well.  I just think with this one, that song is out.  But, to be a good fan, I should probably give the respect of a whole-album listen. :)

As for BP, I loved their first album, the second, not so much, and I haven't heard "Intimacy" yet.  I need to give that a listen.  I love when bands evolve their sounds, it just makes me kind of sad when it's almost completely different.

    Thanks for the comment! :D

I really liked "Because of the Times", too. This to me seems an extension of that, whereas BP's new record is kinda out in left field. I loved "Silent Alarm" and LOVED "Weekend in the City", so I guess I was expecting a lot from them. BP seemed to do no wrong there for a bit. But with KoL, I've gradually come to realise that they're *really* good and I really like their music. And for me, with the new record, it began with "Sex On Fire". :) It just has this really barely-restrained urgency that kind of bubbles until the chorus, when it breaks the bonds and really soars. (I think I mixed enough metaphors there. :)

Different strokes, though. Maybe *you'll* like the new Bloc Party record. :)
