Disclaimer: I love these guys. The following review will be totally and completely biased.Last November, when the Decemberists were in Seattle, Colin Meloy was sick. Very sick. So, Colin promised to make that up to us last night. And boy howdy, did they!
They played mostly from their current album, The Crane Wife, which was alright with me since I love it. I did miss some of their older standards such as Engine Driver or The Sporting Life, but such is life. This type of disappointment I can live with, if you know what I mean. Colin Meloy was obviously having a great time, happy and playful and cool. I mean, the guy drank red wine during his set. Water, common, Gaterade..sure, but red wine is just so, so, well, cool.
The rest of the motley crew were fabulous also: I have a special affection for the Nate Query, the bassist. Of course, I do have a thing for bass players, but Nate is still very cool.
The final song of the encore was, of course, The Mariner's Revenge Song. If you've never heard this song, you need to. But seeing it performed...WOW. Just WOW. They have so much fun with this, including the audience in the fun.
But then, we were all swallowed by a whale and the lights came on and we had to leave. Boooooo. Parting is such sweet sorrow.
Of course, I do have tickets to see them in July! Until then...
