WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Tick Tick Tick Tick Tick Tick...BOOM!

Posted about 1 year ago
Saturday, I had a date with a sexy Swede. Granted, he didn't know we had an appointment but he and his mates showed up none the less. I, and several hundred of my closest friends, gathered for The Hives at the Showbox SODO in Seattle. First, however, I had to endure Holy Ghost Revival. I got a serious casino Axel Rose impersonator vibe from the lead singer. Just in case you're wondering, that’s not a good thing. The best part of their set was when he leapt out into the crowd…and hit the floor. All was good; I don’t think he even felt the fall.Thankfully, their set was short and out came The Donnas. These girls have it all: looks, energy, talent, and wild flippy hair. I really wish I could have brought my 8 year old daughter to see them. She’s taking guitar lessions and class would have been in session for a lesson in cool, a lesson in ??RAWK??. They were terrific and set the stage for the headliners. One of my guilty music pleasures, Sweden’s The Hives hit the stage hard and gave everything they had to the performance. Huge, ??huge, HUGE?? energy and massive amounts of charisma poured onto the audience, who lapped it up like cats to cream. It doesn’t hurt that lead singer, Pelle Almqvist is lovely to look at. Yummmmmmmm. They rocked until there was nothing left to rock. Drenched in sweat, they blew me...uh...the crowd..kisses and left us exhilirated. Whooooo weeeeee. What fun we had.All in all…a great show, a great night. My right ear is still ringing, which is a sign of a good concert (although I do hope it stops soon). The only low point was my lack of shoe pictures. The damn kids kept jiggling my arm. I’ll try harder next time--which is Tuesday and A Place to Bury Strangers. Weeeeeeeee!!!! Life is good.

  2. amber says I KNOW, I KNOW! I feel like I had an incomplete evening with no shoe shots! I've failed miserably... I am very excited about APTBS on Tuesday, but just because The Hives and The Donnas aren't cutting edge or experimental or fresh doesn't mean they can't put on a great show. Sometimes, aural bubble gum is tasty too. :P

  3. Marigold says Great recap of the night Amber. It looks like you had a dang good time. Hmmm. ..I just kind of feel like something is missing...hmmm. missing something is?

  4. watchbatteries says I'm not trying to say they have to be edgy or fresh, but I don't know. I saw a show last night and about 30 people attended. I had fun anyway.

  5. amber says I have been to more shows with less than 100 people than I have arena sized venues. I am a HUGE supporter of my city's local music scene and many of those bands are tettering on the edge of greatness or oblivion. I manage to have fun at most shows; I love to see the experience the artists are having as well as what the crowd feels. These 2 bands served up music and the people watching were having a blast. So there. :)

  6. watchbatteries says I despise arena-sized shows. The only one I went to that was really worth it was Pixies, because well, PIXIES! I'm going up to Bristow (outside of the District, but...not really) to see Radiohead after exams at an ampitheatre. However, those were the most I've ever paid for concert tickets (I got two tickets I can't use of Explosions in the Sky tickets for cheaper), so they better live up to it. Besides, where else am I gonna hear "Digging up Dinosaurs?"

  9. SA says I do despise arena sized shows, but The Hives, that is still a band I would love to see, because like the Kaiser Chiefs, it might not be cutting edge or superb music that is life changing, but they are a sure thing for a big, huge party. (see how I stayed clear of "riot" there? ;)) Good you had a great time Amber, too bad about no shoe pic, but I'm sure you'll make up for that on Tuesday. If I ever get to see them I'll try to make a shoe pic for you. ;)

  10. Bartleby says Great gig report, Amvber. You've really managed to capture the energy and spontaneity of it both on camera and in words -- I must say Sweden has given me a lot of guilty pleasures, the Hives are not one them. PS: It's re-assuring to hear that your daughter would have preferred the Donnas to Montana whatever...

  11. Cody B says Even shoeless, a good capsule from a good night. Thanks so much for holding down the show attending side of music fandom and offering agoraphobes like myself a vicarious thrill.

  12. amber says Watchbatteries: I too hate arena sized shows. Most bands can't carry the sheer size without smoke and mirrors and flames and the experience is weak unless you are against the stage. Plus the ticket prices are usually just stupid. I prefer small, relatively unknown bands in tiny bar/venues. APTBS is right up my alley. I think we are actually quite alike. ardy: The Showbox market is one of my favorite venues but SODO isn't bad at all. The acoustics were ok for the audience but the band can't seem to hear the crowd noise and The Hives were pimping for more and more and more screaming. Many a teenaged girl is hoarse even today. ZZ : glad I could dish something you like SA: The Hives are classic. I would probably go see them again, just for the fun factor. And I will get shoe pictures tomorrow, I swear it! Bart! My daughter doesn't even know who Hannah Montana is. Nor Britney or High School Musical. She's actually learning a Rilo Kiley song in lessons right now. Moneymaker. I'll never make mom of the year, but I'm proud of her. Cody: I know my duty. I will strive to increase my concert going without getting a divorce. This will be a challenge but I'm up for it. ;)

  13. Bartleby says Blimey, "Moneymaker," huh? Is she learning the lyrics along with the guitar tabs? -- You've just restored my hope in future generations with your daughter's learinngs/yearnings.

  14. Cody B says On the serious tip..those are some excellent photos. My six year old is on the cusp of lessons..I hope he goes the less than arena route, but I believe he has mega rock star aspirations.

  15. poebegone says oh, no. i don't have wild flippy hair. i don't have it all. ;d the nothing-but-hair 3rd pic more than makes up for the shoelessness, dear. reminds me of like a Liz Phair photo or something. great post. and i am right with Cody in vicarious thrill-seeking through you - that especially applies to your APTBS so hurry on back with the stories!

  16. Jonh Ingham says Those Donnas pics are fantastic. And who cares about 'cool'? The Hives understand just what it takes to be a great rock band.
    Permalink posted 02/25/2008
  17. RGM says Looked like a great gig! Still gotta check out the Showbox. Do the Hives still have their Ron Jeremy looking bassplayer lol?
    Permalink posted 02/26/2008
  18. ROCKNROLLPIMP says i love how ppl listen to only music that is "cool" so they miss all the good shit and listen to SUCKY kool music WOW that RAWKS (my nads)

  19. amber says Moneymaker, indeed. She knows the lyrics but I'm not sure she knows what they mean. :) She's also learning Green Day's Bvld of Broken Dreams. There's no Disney music in our house. :P Thanks Cody/Jonh...I took lots of pictures but the crowd was bopping, so my arm was jiggled a ton. Got a few good ones though. Thanks for your sweet words. Ilay...you aren't alone. My hair is short, my life is boring, and I have zero talent. I don't have it all either. Ray: This was at the Showbox's new purchase, the Showbox SODO. It was ok, but not as good as the Showbox proper. And Ron Jeremy was in the house, yes. :) Pimpy: you gave cool it's coolness. Next to the definition of cool, is your picture. And I never snub good music or a good time just because. Sometimes a band has a long standing fan base because they have something to offer. :)
