WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Here's to looking at the good...

I'd like to say, *WORK F'ING SUCKS*. Now that that's behind me (at least until tomorrow) I would like to pontificate a bit about last Saturday at the Download Festival.First, I had the immense pleasure of meeting another MOGGER, this time "Tybees":http://mog.com/tybees who was a wonderfully nice guy. Sheesh, you MOGGERS are the best, I swear.I'll leave it up to you to figure out who's foot is who's but here's a hint: I shaved before the festival...Unfortunately, I now have to separate the event into 2 parts.*1. The music.*We all know this is what we are all here for. The line-up had great potential: Back Door Slam, The Thermals, Nada Surf, Presidents of the USA, Incubus, Modest Mouse...not bad at all. But they had 2 stages, totally on opposite sides of the venue. You couldn't stake your spot for the main stage _and_ see the acts on the smaller stage. Plus, The Thermals overlapped with Nada Surf. Shit. So I missed The Thermals again. Nada Surf, however, was great.*"Matthew Caws":http://mog.com/matthew_caws of Nada Surf (and fellow MOGGER)*After Nada Surf, there was The Presidents of the USA. Jaye and I were in the front, with only a couple of young men between us and the security barricade. When PUSA came out, the crowd when wild. And I mean *WILD*. I got kicked in the face by a crowd surfer, Jaye has a bruised and swollen nose, and the 2 boys in front of us...well, they will most likely need therapy. But I'd like to say, I'm sorry for molesting you. It was involuntary, I promise.Happily, PUSA WAS INCREDIBLE, despite the blunt trauma we experienced.A highlight was when bassist, Andrew's son came out and dad put him on his shoulders and continued to rock out. Cutest thing I've ever seenWe bolted the pit after PUSA and joined our friends on the blanket. I have no decent pictures of Incubus or Modest Mouse because I was in BFE, but Incubus was alright...not my favorite music but they sounded good...and Modest Mouse sounded better in Chicago, IMHO.Now..........*2. The Advertising*We were smothered with commercialism, worse than any festival I've been to. The big screen was used between sets to show commercials, the same commercials, over and over and over and over...However, the powers-that-be didn't see the benefit of actually showing the bands on the screen. It was black during the artist's performances, leaving many unable to see what they were up to, so far, far away. However, I did use the VW advertising machine for our purposes in one way..._what does that say???_ Take a closer look.It was a good day, really. Good music, great friends, sunshine and all. However, I will never drive a VW, and this song, which I was bludgened with easily 20 times will never sound the same

  1. tybees says HA! You painted the MOG ad on the VW? That is f'ing awesome! And hell yeah, the Presidents were ??so?? great! I loved when all those people came on stage to dance in the background, esp the little girl. You got some great pics of them. Incubus was a bit mundane, but Modest Mouse kicked my ass and notched up my love for them. It was pretty aggrivating that the big screen was used for ads only...I swear I saw that Old Spice commercial about 50 times. And for the people in the waaay back, it's the only way they can see what's happening on the stage, so it was a bummer that it wasn't utilized. Still, despite the separated stages (which caused us to miss the Thermals and the Heavenly States in lieu of a good spot at the main stage), I had an absolute BLAST, and it was great to meet you, fellow MOGger!

  2. amber says That little girl was adorable too. Soooo cute. Earlier the boy came out with a baggy of trail mix to share with daddy...he was scooted away then, but got to rock with dad later. It was a blast, i agree completely. You should think about one of the other fests...Coachella? Lolla? Bumbershoot? Come on...be fun.

  3. tybees says I've got the festival bug in my bloodstream now...Bumbershoot looks like tons of fun, but Download drained most of my funds so I won't be able to make it, dammit! Oh well, I've got 'til next year to save up for Coachella and Lolla. I just want people to know that if there is a festival near them, no matter the bands, it's an experience to remember forever and it's worth what you have to go through to get there!

  4. amber says oO...I second that. I love all types of live music but festivals have something special to give. I relish the opportunity to discover new music loves in the smaller bands on the smaller stages at a festival. Plus, there's the unsurpassed people watching, sunny weather (usually), and the feeling of community....unlike anything else in the world.

  5. B42 says Work sucks, agreed, as does too much advertising. Looks like a good time was had by all. I'd love to just take a year off and go Festival hopping; the only problem I'm having lately with it all is that the promoters seem to be trying to please everybody to get a soldout show by adding too many bands with short sets and too many stages. Great post, Mog On!

  6. giwastar says That add to the VW made me smile. At least some advetising is done tastefully!
