of Child Stars and Chiming Guitars

Posted over 5 years ago
After over a year and a half of hemming and hawing I finally picked up a Rilo Kiley album. Why in the hell didn't I do this sooner?I remember hearing the single Portions for Foxes and thinking; "this is amazing!" I often frequented the band's website and listened to the two or three songs that shuffle nonstop. I even went as far as bookmarking the site and visiting it a couple times a month. But I didn't once make the effort to buy an album. I'm probably a couple of years late with this one but, wow.Where to begin? Jenny Lewis is a lyrical mastermind. She tells it how it is, and she tells it with conviction. She embraces her flaws, as in Portions for Foxes; telling the world "Baby I'm bad news." She can also effortlessly span several different genres, including some country, rock, folk, and even a little bit of soul! And I didn't even mention that she's pretty nice to look at....Little bad can be said about Blake Sennet, Rilo's guitarist. He knows how to make himself heard without being overbearing of Jenny's beautiful lyrics. He manages to surprise several times as well with some virtuoso-ish backing guitars. The same can be said for the rest of the band, all inspiring musicians.Well, I also just picked up Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins album, so I've got to make some time to check that out. I'll be back.

  1. Peggah says Have you checked out "The Elected"? Blake is in that. I really like their song "I'll be your man". :) And Jenny doesn't look like she's wearing a shirt in that pic! That looks like a bad bra, hah.
