MELT-PROOF AND SCRATCH-RESISTANT

Saturday Originals

Posted about 1 year ago

Once again, I take my lead from Baudolino when he declares Saturday the day for playing originals of songs made famous by somebody else.

This is a very obvious one, but precisely because it's so obvious, I cannot resist it. I know the Left Banke had a fair-sized hit with it in the US in 1966, but in the UK it was the Four Tops who had the hit in 1968 - I didn't even know this wasn't a Tops original until about 20 years later when I heard a Left Banke album, and was an instant convert.

Are you going to post the bizarre connection between the Left Banke and Spinal Tap, that I revealed on your blog a few months back?

    OK then

Thanks to Baudolino for this piece of highly esoteric information :-

Michael McKean (who played David St Hubbins in “This is Spinal Tap”) sang on the Left Banke’s single “Suddenly” b/w “Ivy Ivy” in 1968. The record was made by keyboardist Michael Brown and a bunch of session musos, was boycotted by the fan club, and got next to no radio play.

The left banke had a big hit with this, it hit #5 and the four tops was #14 at a time when a lot of motown artists were doing their own covers of hit songs. One of my favorite songs of 1966.I always wondered what happened to Renee

Here in the US, I never even knew that the 4 Tops covered it. So now you can put their version on Sunday Covers.
