On 1 December 1976, Thames TV presenter Bill Grundy was presenting the 'Today' programme - the rock band Queen were supposed to appear but flounced out at the last minute - and some bright executive managed to get the Sex Pistols onto this teatime programme at very short notice. Two explosive minutes made Grundy's name known way beyond the usual Today audience, and kicked off the British public's brief mad fear and loathing of 'punks'.Grundy was apparently half-drunk and grossly patronising of the gang of seeming yobboes he was interviewing. The Pistols, goaded and encouraged by a sneering Grundy, were foul-mouthed and abusive, making free use of sweary words not usually heard at that time of day.Tabloid sensation and public outrage followed swiftly.Grundy's career was effectively ruined by the encounter while the Pistols went from here to world domination inside 6 months.By 1978 the Television Personalities were able to ask mockingly 'Where's Bill Grundy Now?' in this record, one of my absolutely favourite discs of the period
