WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Went to the disco, couldn't believe my eyes

I am really into old freestyle music from the late 80s, and so much so that I attended the "Freestyle Reunion Show" at MSG this past year, which featured Noel, Stevie B, the Cover Girls, and so forth. Almost all freestyle is about two things: falling in love, and partying. One of my favorite freestyle performers is Debbie Deb, who had two seminal tracks: Look out Weekend, and When I Hear Music. These tracks are eerily similar, but neither of them sounds that different from modern electro. If Debbie's overprocessed Latina Diva voice was replaced by a German chanteuse, both songs would be indistinguishable from Miss Kittin or Chicks on Speed. Janet Jackson did a cover of "Look Out Weekend" earlier this year that was leaked on the internets and then quickly rescinded. It doesn't hold a candle to the original, though.Debbie Deb has a MySpace page. Freestyle is having a minor nostalgia revival right now and there are several "Freestyle Explosion!" type tours going around southern CA and the NY/NJ area.
