Bin Browser's Lament

Posted almost 6 years ago
Of all the screwed up things that the RIAA has done, I think that the one that I most resent is that they have made it impractical for me to browse through bins of albums or CDs at my favorite record store. As long as the RIAA insists on treating it's customers like criminals I am not buying any new CDs. There is still good browsing to be had at the used CD stores but it is not the same as going down to Wax Trax or Twist and Shout and just wandering aimlessly through the bins.I am a man of dangerous enthusiasms. And it is through the process of Bin Browsing that I have stumbled upon many of those enthusiasms. While leafing through the CDs at Wax Trax one day I found October Project. It was lucky that I discovered them in the age of digital music because if it had been vinyl I would have worn their LPs out by now.Julie Flanders writes powerful and memorable lyrics that were delivered by the unique voice of Mary Fahl. After years of listening to Mary sing I had an image of her in my mind as a large woman. It just seemed that it would take a powerful physical presence to project that voice. When I first saw a picture of Mary I was flabergasted. She is a tiny, beautiful woman, and I consider it a feat of some modern day magic that she can sound as she does."Here is a link":http://www.sonyclassical.com/artists/fahl/video/GoingHome_NoMovVidFull_ref.mov to a quicktime of a video that Mary did for a tune that she performed for the movie Gods and Generals.

  1. fastnbulbous says I'm confused. Are you talking about Chicago's Wax Trax that moved from Lincoln to Damen 9 years ago? Didn't they close a few years ago?

  2. alephnul says Sorry, I should have been more specific about the location. I am in the Denver area, and although I haven't been there in a year or so I believe that our Wax Trax is still in business.
