Of all the screwed up things that the RIAA has done, I think that the one that I most resent is that they have made it impractical for me to browse through bins of albums or CDs at my favorite record store. As long as the RIAA insists on treating it's customers like criminals I am not buying any new CDs. There is still good browsing to be had at the used CD stores but it is not the same as going down to Wax Trax or Twist and Shout and just wandering aimlessly through the bins.

I am a man of dangerous enthusiasms. And it is through the process of Bin Browsing that I have stumbled upon many of those enthusiasms. While leafing through the CDs at Wax Trax one day I found October Project. It was lucky that I discovered them in the age of digital music because if it had been vinyl I would have worn their LPs out by now.

Julie Flanders writes powerful and memorable lyrics that were delivered by the unique voice of Mary Fahl. After years of listening to Mary sing I had an image of her in my mind as a large woman. It just seemed that it would take a powerful physical presence to project that voice. When I first saw a picture of Mary I was flabergasted. She is a tiny, beautiful woman, and I consider it a feat of some modern day magic that she can sound as she does.

Here is a link to a quicktime of a video that Mary did for a tune that she performed for the movie Gods and Generals.

I'm confused. Are you talking about Chicago's Wax Trax that moved from Lincoln to Damen 9 years ago? Didn't they close a few years ago?

Sorry, I should have been more specific about the location. I am in the Denver area, and although I haven't been there in a year or so I believe that our Wax Trax is still in business.

So I go in to my boss's office to play a track for him that I am very fond of at the moment. He sees the file structure of the volume on our server that I kind of keep for myself, primarily to keep my office music on. His eyes light up and we start discussing our relative tastes in music, which turn out to be remarkably similar. (It is a good sign when your boss freaks out that you have Gram Parsons albums.)

He starts telling me about music that his teenage daughter turned him on to, and the first band that he mentions is The Motet. Now I am thinking "Teenage daughter = sappy pop", so I am not in a particular hurry to find and listen to anything by these guys, but eventually I find some of their tunes and take a listen. He has a remarkable daughter. This music is smart, it is jazzy with a tight hook, it has a compelling afro-cuban backbeat, and it is very good.

It turns out that they are from Boulder, so I am going to be looking for a chance to see this lot in concert.

Artist: Album: Drive to Survive Track:

This morning, while I was still trying to establish equilibrium, and failing, the local radio station (99.5 in Denver, The Mountain (think KFOG at altitude)) ran a little theme set about "breakup songs". Of course the example that they settled on was "Go Your Own Way" by Fleetwood Mac, which caused me to turn the radio off ( I loved FM as an English blues band, but Buckingham and Nicks should be flogged as the pop whores that they are). But it caused a glimmer of a thought to penetrate my morning fog regarding just what is the best breakup song.

After some coffee and nourishment and with due consideration I would like to nominate Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers for their song "Cool Guitars". In case you are unfamiliar with them here is the first verse;

Well my baby threw me out because I drink too much
She offered me her car so I could move my stuff
I gonna sell the bitch's car
I gonna sell the bitch's car
I gonna sell the bitch's car
And buy myself a cool guitar

Now that is a breakup song.
