With his spiritual-sounding sax style, which he could roughen up when he needed to, Sonny Stitt in some ways sounds like an almost perfect blend of Charlie Parker (particularly when Stitt played alto) and John Coltrane. This rather random set is a pleasant and fluid introduction to Stitt's sound, and while it isn't exactly essential, it gets the job done. Among the highlights are the easy energy of the opener, "Jeep Blues," and the jaunty push of "Eight Track Blues."
