MOG Editorial Review
One of the folk movement's most important figures has both of his best side on display throughout Hard Travelin', in one sense as an artist preserving the tradition of trailblazers like Woody Guthrie and another in creating his own timeless protest tunes. Comprised of two albums, Sings the Songs of Woody Guthrie as well as his self-titled record, Elliott provides an enticing country twang to the usual folk sound, and this pays off both on his Guthrie covers as well as his takes on traditional tunes. Elsewhere, songs like the self-penned "Sadie Brown" show that while the man will be remembered for keeping the spirits of others alive, he had plenty to say himself... Or in this case, yodel himself.

AMG Review of Hard Travelin'
Richie Unterberger
All Music GuideRamblin' Jack Elliott's early-'60s Prestige LPs Sings the Songs of Woody Guthrie and Ramblin' Jack Elliott are combined onto a single 77-minute disc on this CD reissue, with one song ("I Love Her So/I Got a Woman") deleted for space reasons. It's not as good as hearing Woody Guthrie himself, and may strike contemporary listeners as a bit tame and dated. Elliott played an important role in the '60s folk revival as a popularizer of Guthrie's songs and style, though, and this is one of the best places to hear him at his best, on both Guthrie covers and interpretations of various traditional and blues songs.
