With the millennial odometer just moments away from rollover, Love as Laughter slam on the brakes with Destination 2000, which belies its retro-futurist kitsch cover art to deliver the kind of defiant, flag-waving classic rock glories typically reserved for cover bands and state-fair oldies acts. A smorgasbord of power chords, lumbering riffs, and chunky rhythms, Destination 2000 most closely evokes the wasted, protean rock & roll of the Jimmy Miller-era Rolling Stones, capturing the bloozy swagger but not even attempting to mimic the serpentine sensuality. Frontman Sam Jayne is too smart and too skilled for this sort of nonsense, of course, but there's no denying the sheer dumb fun to be had here. And what's so wrong with that? After all: 2-0-0-0, party over, oops, out of time -- why not party like it's 1969?
