AMG Review of Ultimate Collection

Released as part of Capitol's polish job of the Solar catalog -- which coincided with the label's 30th anniversary -- Ultimate Collection is a well-executed Midnight Star compilation, one that contains each one of the group's charting singles. Though some of the singles would have been better represented in 12" and album-mix form, the selection is too smart and thorough to deny; the highlights include "No Parking (On the Dance Floor)," "Operator," "Headlines," "Midas Touch," and "Wet My Whistle." As of 2006, this was the best single-disc set for casual fans and newcomers, and it's hard to imagine it being trumped. The sound is crisp, and A. Scott Galloway's liner notes are typically informative and insightful.
